This story went on for about 25 weeks. It started with Stefano kidnapping Marlena for a few weeks and making her believe she was dreaming, this left her open to evil. Next Salem's Christmas was being destroyed by desecrations. It was discovered by the viewers that the devil had possessed Marlena and was controlling her. The devil used his knowledge to wreck a lot of lives in Salem. After making Salem residents lives a living hell and trying to kill Bo, Billie, Kristen, Stefano, Father Francis, John, And Marlena he was found out and tied to a bed ready to be exorcised. People who knew and helped with the exorcism were, John Black, Kristen, Tony DiMera, Father Francis, Mike Horton, Caroline Brady, and three scholars. 

During his reign the devil also used a lot of illusions and ghosts to hurt the Salemites. These were the ghost of Austin's dad Curtis Reed, Johns dead wife Isabella, four demons, an illusion of Sami, Marlena who morphed into Kristen, and morphed into a panther and into a beast. Supernatural beings on the good side were The angel Gabe, and GOD???

While tied to the bed the devil tried allsorts to try and take over, and managed to escape many times, even throwing Stefano off her balcony paralyzing him. Finally the demon was exorcised apparently killing Marlena, but John didn't give up, he went to the morgue, had one final confrontation with the devil and took Marlena's lifeless body to the chuch, he placed her on an alter, where a light shone down and Marlena rose to be confronted by family and friends. This story is now rarely mentioned, but was actually really fab, not to mention risky on the writers part.
