1. The New Boy
Pinja drew in her maths notebook. Her teacher tried to teach something but Pinja didn't listen. In her opinion, school was the most needless thing in the world right after parents. Discos, free time and boy friends instead were very interesting but parents didn't accept them. They said that "a girl as young as Pinja shouldn't be interested in them."
When the bell rang as a sign for pupils to go to the recess. The pupils rushed out of the classroom after books were slammed in bags by Pinja and the others in her class.
Pinja didn't worry very much though she didn't have friends. Pinja knew all pupils in her school. She looked at the stream of people. There were Mari, Sari and Ari, a trio who had been together since day care times. Piia and Miia, the twin girls moved from the town Imatra were listening to a walkman.
But who was that? There had not been that good-looking boy here before. Thick golden-brown hair reched almost his shoulders. Light blue eyes shone their icy light. The boy was so calm that no one seemed to notice him. But, most important, he was alone. And Pinja decided to get her.
She knew she wouldn't have time for that on this recess so she started to stroll to her classroom. She was tired because she had been awake last night until the small hours.
As the bell rang that lovely boy had turned his eyes to her and now he was walking right towards her. At the door of her classroom he run into Pinja whose cell phone fell on the floor by the force of the bump. The boy lifted up the phone, took Pinja's hand and left calmly and peacefully to the front door, Pinja with him. On his way he threw the cell phone into a dustbin.
Pinja tried to struggle but the boy had just too firm grip of her hand. She inquired her kidnapper who was he and where were they boing but he didn't say a word.
They walked across the school yard into a forest. This forest wasn't familiar to Pinja so after only five minutes walk, when they couldn't see the school any more, Pinja was completely lost. All trees looked the same as the tree before them, though Pinja didn't have a sense of direction, anyway.
Soon Pinja didn't have a clue of for how long they had been walking. It was getting dark. For a long while Pinja didn't hear anything else but them walking on the soft moss. Birds weren't singing either.
The air was muggy and mist begun to fall. They didn't stop to eat, rest or for any kind of need. It snapped in the bushes now and then. The fog was thick like porrige so Pinja didn't see in front of herself more than few steps. She had to trust in her silent leader now.
Pinja wasn't tired at all any more. Evaporating water and the crispy air made her mind stay spry. They had been walking without stopping in the fog all night.
As the mist was clearing Pinja and the boy stopped. Pinja noticed that she had come on a top of a cliff. The scenery was awesome; she could see clearly to the opposite shore. There was high spruces at the foot of the cliff. Thick mist was floating in the valley. The sun was rising.
Suddenly a bird screamed above Pinja. She turned her head towards up but she could see nothing but fat clouds. A scream like that was heard right next to her. She turned again but she still couldn't see anything else but the boy. There was one scream more from the sky but this time Pinja knew that she wouldn't see anything. Pinja didn't understand right away where the answer to the scream came from but she guessed it soon.
The assumption turned out to be right when Pinja noticed that she was held by a vulture's claws. The boy hadn't spoken because birds can't talk. The grip had been so firm because of the claws. The boy had transformed into a vulture and grabbed Pinja's shoulders.
The vulture lifted Pinja up into the air. In a slash they were so high that the lowest clouds reached Pinja's forehead. The vulture stopped rising.
The scenery was great there. They could see dense spruce forests and unknown lakes and cliffs for miles but there was no buildings that they could see.
The vulture boy pulled his claws in without a warning. Pinja fell down, right towards the cliffs.
<I'm falling, I'm FALLING!!> Pinja thought, <I'm falling and I'll die when I hit those sharp rocks. I'll DIE! I wish I could fly like that boy, no, a vulture, no, a mongrel.> Pinja glanced up expecting that she'd see the bird high above her but, most amazing, she saw it only metre above herself.
<Now it's chasing me, it's going to eat me! I wish I was like that... creature so i could fly, fight for my life! I'm falling, falling, falling.... I wish I was a bird so I could spread out my wings and save myself! Hey, now what? The speed is getting slower... stopping... I'm getting higher! Is this some kind of illusion? I hope this includes landing safely, too. Hey, it's working! That moss tussock seems to be nice place to land.> |
