By the Way, the Person in the picture is not me. If you are interested in knowing more about this gentleman, please check out modelflying.org.uk

But, I did make a few model planes myself. Actually -  just 3. In fact, just 2 planes and one aircraft carrier.

  1. My first experiment was with a 1:72 scale Supermarine Spitfire. The kit was manufactured by  Italeri. In terms of size, it was a big disappointment. Too small and I HAD TO PAINT THE THING AFTERWARDS!

The above picture is from the website www.aviation-history.com

More details about the Spitfire are available at:

Aviation-History.com (Really Detailed and Exhaustive)

DeltaWeb - UK (Pretty Good as Well)

Nevertheless, I learnt a lot of things while I assembled the Spitfire. For instance - paint the model while you assemble it not after. After a lot of heartburn, I went in for my second model - The Varyag

  1. The Varyag was the name of the aircraft carrier that the Russian Navy had decided to build, but couldn't complete due to lack of funds. So, in a cruel twist of fate, I completed the Varyag before even the Russians did. I was probably the saddest person on the planet when I learnt that the Russians were planning to sell this colossus to a Chinese businessperson for conversion to some sort of floating casino.

It took me more than 3 months to finally complete this model, which taught me my second set of lessons. Don't try to build a ship without building a boat first.

You could obtain more details about the Varyag (and other things) from these sites:

Warships1.com (Everything about warships. Although the Indian section isn't so good)

Aj's Website (Short and to the point)

BharatRakshak.com (A Fantastic Un-official Site. All about India's fighting forces.)
