Sophie's choice

She met him on the way to school. They fell in love on sight.
They dreamt about their love by day and lived their love by night.
He held her hand; she stroked his cheek; they sighed and moaned as one;
they revelled in their newfound joy; togetherness was fun.

The other people at the school looked down upon such bliss;
they muttered about right and wrong; they sneered at happiness;
they thought that it was just a crush, that it would pass away;
they did not know that it would grow and flourish by the day.

Their friends and family at home were also not too pleased.
Hers were anxious to meet him, and could not be appeased
by her dissembling, her deceits, nor by her coy red cheeks,
while his had lost all touch with him; he'd disappeared for weeks.

The love they had remained unknown, was never quite explained;
they wallowed in an ecstasy they always kept contained,
until one day, across the world, the papers bore a feature
of lust and love, old-age and youth. Of Sophie and her teacher.
