Father Jim's Downfall

Right after mass, when Father Jim came home,
he found that he'd been burgled and cried out:
"I've always been an honest priest, devout,
obeying every letter sent from Rome."

He couldn't understand why God had failed
to smite the evildoers in their tracks;
he tossed and turned in bed, prayed to relax,
but constantly his niggling doubts prevailed.

That week his flock became a bit confused
when, glowering down at them from his high perch,
he damned them all to hell, stumbled in church,
to gossip that Christ's blood seemed overused.

His downfall soon complete, he was replaced.
Caught stealing from the janitor, he left disgraced.
