jimmy eat world - futures
After an actual good band goes mainstream, you expect them to come back, to put it bluntly, sucking. Jimmy Eat World counteracts this stereotype with their latest album, "Futures." Although almost every song on this album has single potential, the band managed to keep their pre-eminent sound, and put together a gnashingly gratifying collection of songs.
I think one of the most dominant reasons that I like this album so much is the opening and concluding songs. It has been crammed into my head over twelve years of school and the introduction and conclusion to any story is the most important part. This album handles that factor perfectly. If you're looking for a different analogy, this album is like sex. You throw yourself into it, very excited, and it ends with begin ready to roll over and fall asleep with complete satisfaction. Minus the sweat. "Futures" instantly ensnares the listener with it's upbeat tempo, shrilling music, and powerful vocals. "23" eases you out of the string of beautifully woven music and you are left saying, "That was pretty good." You decide either that you are content, or that you'd like to give it another go.
Other songs that really grab attention are, "Drugs or Me," "Night Drive," and of course, Jimmy Eat World's first single off of this album, "Pain."
"Drugs or Me" sweeps you back into the "Clarity" days with six and a half minutes of Adkins's beautiful voice stretched over convincingly sincere lyrics. Which, in the growing world of "emo"... is hard to accomplish.
"Night Drive" serves as the power ballad for "Futures." Also, being the second to last song on the album, plays a climatic role. Again, with the sex.
Jimmy Eat World continues with my appreciation, adoration, and much applause. |
