By Amos Lassen (Little Rock, Arkansas) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) Herndon, James P. "Jack's Shop: Beyond the Front Porch", AuthorHouse, 2009. A Memoir Amos Lassen The 50's and 60's in rural Virginia were simpler times. Things were so different then and life seemed to be so much easier. We see this period through the eyes of James Herndon and we become part of the peacefulness of the period. The book is Herndon's memories which he retells us with the hope that we will never forget. Herndon was a young boy who grew up in the country and seemed to be happy until he began to not feel well and was diagnosed with encephalitis, a brain illness. He survived and we are so lucky that he did so we can have this beautiful little book. Herndon lived in the community of Rochelle, a town better known as Jack's Shop, Virginia which was its name until the Civil War. The life of Rochelle was simple--there were fishing holes, segregation and outhouses and racism was everywhere. Herndon's family and friends were people of virtue and trust and these ideals were taken for granted. The book consists of 25 chapters and each can be read as a separate short story because at the center of each is a memorable incident. The book is both funny and sad as it reflects on the way things were. So much of it sounds familiar and this is what makes it so touching. |
