A Troubled Heart

John 13:31 - 14:14

Introduction:
In these section of verses we find a long farewell address from Jesus to His disciples. Jesus sought to encourage His disciples with truths vital to their own peace of mind, as well as their ability to represent Him to a lost and hostile world. These are His final instructions to provide help for troubled hearts, (14:1, 27) Lacking understanding in His purpose in God's plan and an ability to relate this to their own existence and purpose troubled them.
We experience the same "troubled hearts" today. The truth they needed to settle their disturbed hearts are the truths we need also. These are needed for both unity and courage. The fears and hostilities they would face, the unanswered questions, differences of temperament and the jealousies which had existed among them would alienate them from one another and render them useless in the plan of God.

  1. Truth Regarding His Glorification (13:31-32)
    1. The Father would glorify Christ and validate Him as Son of God.
    2. Accomplish redemption through the cross.
    3. Provide means of proclaiming and manifesting God's love to others.
      1. Through daily cleansing and fellowship with Him.
      2. By the Spirit of Truth sent to dwell in them (us)

At this point in their understanding, they had not grasped all this. The advent of the Spirit would revolutionize their lives.

  2. Truth Regarding His Departure (vs 33)
    1. His departure was vital to their needs. (16:7)
    2. His departure was to enable them to receive the Spirit

  3. Truth Regarding New Commandment (vss. 34-35)
    1. Loving one another was not new, but at heart of the Law
    2. "New" in the sense of unused and fresh.

No one had heretofore manifested God's love as Christ in such a sacrificial way. (even as I have loved you). Loving one another brings comfort and help but it is also a powerful means of manifesting Christ to a hostile world and an evidence of the reality of the message of Christ (v.35)

In view of the troubled hearts of the disciples in these passages we find two needs and two problems every Christian faces in his or her walk in the world.

First Problem: a troubled heart (anxious, uncertain, uneasy, worried, unsettled, distressed)
First Need: "Let not your heart be troubled" not just an idea but a command. Do not let...troubled.

By applying the truth of Scripture we are to consistently calm the agitation's of our heart. The Lord was here calling on them to deal with their fears.

Second Problem and the Root: fear coupled with unbelief.

  1. The greatest problem in man is fear caused by a lack of trusting God.
  2. This is the root and heart that leads to "troubled hearts" (Isa.57:20-21) There is no peace.

Second Need: (also a solution) a relationship with God through faith and trust.

  1. To believe God is to trust Him who is "the way, the truth, and the life"
  2. Uncertainty or an ignorance or a lack of spiritual understanding about God and His plan weakens our faith.
  3. Troubled hearts because of lack of understanding the Word as it related to the suffering of Christ.

How do we get understanding? By asking questions and getting answers through instruction.
This is what occurred here. Questions by, Peter (13:36-37)of destiny, Thomas(14:5)of skepticism, Philip(14:8)of realism, Judas[not Iscariot](14:22)of revelation, and an unasked question answered(14:12-14)of direction/purpose.

  1. Peter: Where are you going? what's going to happen to us? Is our future secure?
    Answer: 14:2-3, a prepared place
  2. Thomas: How are we going to get there? uncertainty of where we are going.
    Answer: 14:6-7, affirmation of faith.
  3. Philip: Show us God and we will believe! the need for concrete evidence.
Answer: 14:9-11, Jesus is God incarnate
  4. Judas: Why don't you reveal yourself to the world, now?
Answer: 14:23, He does, through believers
  5. Unasked: What is my purpose in life, why am I here? Basic longing in man.
Answer: 14:12-14, To be a reflector of Christ

Unless this question is answered and found in a personal relationship with Christ, it is an issue which not only drives men from one pursuit to another but diverts them from the call of God in their lives. The answer as a promise to the church, the heart of the passage and key to a settled heart and one we must come to grips with if we are to be effective.
Man seeks acceptance and success through the way of the world. - Satanic deception. When we get caught up in our own ambitions, supplying our own needs, fighting our own battles, which account for anxiety and distress of heart, a life of fret and worry which leads to neglect of family, friends, and the needs of others.

Jesus said,
Don't allow your yourselves to be distressed. If you believe God, then believe me.
Promises have been given you for your security.
