A Time for Restoration
2 Chron. 28-30

THESIS:Ignorance of God's truths may well be the cause for the misconstrued view of modern day revivals

What is REVIVAL? We see, hear and have taken part in many revival meetings. They occur in just about every church at various times a year. In every case, there is a starting time and an ending time and a plea to bring in the lost or unsaved. The burden is then placed on a visiting pastor or evangilist to preach a series of salvation or revival -type messages in an effort to see many souls saved. I sincerely applaud their efforts but I sense the concept and impression left on many can be very damaging. I am certain that many would dispute what I am saying and I have no probliem with that. Everyone has a right to their view and opinion.

With that said, I submit to you a biblical perspective of Revival, When we can know that revival is needed, when we can see revival beginning, revival accomplished and the results of revival.

We need to understand that revival is not for the lost but for the believers. The term revival implies bring back to life. There has to be life there to bring back. Like Jogn says to the Ephesian church, "You have left your first love." The main reason was because of the continued decline in the attitude, character and thinking of the church.

I. How then can we know that Revival is Needed?

  1. "he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD."(NIV) The lives of God's people are not right before God. (2 Chron.28:1)Like King Ahaz, our live and conduct is not a reflection of a representative of the King of kings. We have become acclamated to the established religious system of doing things and not heeding what the Father requires of His children. By our very actions and observances we find we are disobeying God and our form of Christianity becomes idolatry.
  2. Verse 21."Ahaz took some of the things from the temple of the LORD and from the royal palace and from the princes and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him."(NIV) Ahaz removed a portion of the treasures for the House of the Lord. Like Ahaz, the modern church has removed some TREASURES from the house of the Lord.
In John's letter to the seven churches wee see in Ephesus, Christ walking in the midst of the churches. By the time we get to Laodicia, He is outside knocking to come in. Paul says we have "this treasure in earthen vessels." The treasure referred to is, of course, the Holy Spirit indwelling the believers.
    1. One of the treasures removed is the worship in spirit, a Christ=centered worship. John 4:23 "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him."(KJV) We have departed from freedom in worship to an organized program according to man's view of worship.
    2. 2 Tim 4:3-4"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."(KJV)We have reduced the effect of the Word of God by preaching and teaching a socially accepted gospel. Something that is pleasing to the ears.
    3. Like Ahaz, who gave it to the king of Assyria, we also compromise our convictions and belief with the world system. His act to the Assyrian king did not benefit him neither will our compromise with the world benefit us.
  3. Verse 22."In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD." (NIV) Ahaz ignored the chastening of the Lord and turned more against Him. The Lord chastens those He loves. Many get mad at God and turn from His correction. Remember, all things work together for our good.
  4. Verse 23."He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought, "Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so they will help me." But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel."(NIV) Notice that he turned to other gods for hope and help. Many today are still living by sight and do turn to the myriad of worldly gods for their hope and help. Whether it be their job, their income, their possessions, and yes, even thier local denomination. Our hope is in the Lord not in what we have accomplished. We have the very ability by the grace of God.
  5. Verse 24a."And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God,..."(KJV) Ahaz cut up the vessels. Today we cut up the vessels when we add to or take from the Word. If it doesn't suit us we refuse it or remove it. We add man's terachings and doctrine to the Word to benefit our particular denomination. This is cutting up the vessels. It is creating a division among the Body of Christ.
  6. Verse 24b."shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem."(KJV) When all these things are occuring, we like Ahaz, close the access to the Father. Zaccheus could not see jesus for the people. Is that not what is happening today. The world sees the church as a bunch of hypocrites and we are held in low esteem. They see the religious system that we have allowed to lead us. If people can not see Christ in an individual, we have closed the access to Him.

II. When Revival Begins.(2 Chron.29:1-36)

How can we know when revival begins? The Word once again tell us.
  1. Verse 2."he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD,..."(KJV) King Hezekiah represents a change in leadership. We know that revival is underway when their is a change in leadership in our lives and we become obedient to the Lord and live the way He wants us to. His way not ours.It appears that today our faith revolves around our lives and circumstances rather than our lives circumstances around our faith. We are not our own. We are bought with a price. The precious blood of Jesus.
  2. Verse 3."opened the doors of the house of the LORD, and repaired them."(KJV) When we become obedient, restoration begins. repairs are being made. The access or door to the Lord is opened. Jesus said, I am the Door.
  3. Verse 5."Hear me, ye Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house of the LORD God of your fathers, and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place."(KJV) We know revival is occuring when personal cleansing takes place. Paul says, "Let us therefore cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and of the spirit." We are to mortify the deeds of the flesh. This temple, our bodies. is the Temple of the Living God and it must be clean. Praise, testimoies, prayer and supplication must be restored. Our relationship with the Father must be personal and active.
  4. Verse 11."My sons, be not now negligent: for the LORD hath chosen you to stand before him, to serve him, and that ye should minister unto him, and burn incense."(KJV) We must realize our true position before the Lord. Like Israel, we also are a chosen people unto God. We try to hide many things from our families, our friends, and our fellow church brethren. But we can't hide from God. We must realize He sees our conduct and the intents of our heart. We need to be honest with ourselves and represent the Father in all honesty.
  5. Verse 21-35a.Hezekiah restores the offerings and sacrifes to the House of the Lord. A sincere change in leadership in our lives will bring about the restoration of returning to God what is His. Giving of our substances, our tithes, is almost a thing of the past. Hezekiah also restored praise and thank offerings. Tithing, is God's rightful portion. Praise and thank offering (freewill) is over and above the tithe. It is our portion be cause we love Him. We know that revival is beginning in our lives when we give back to God His portion and go the extra mile giving Him the praise and freewill offerings as a proof of our love. All are His and we are but His stewarts, we mange His affairs and we need to give back His own plus interest.

III. When Revival is Accomplished.(2 Chron. 29:35b-36)

We will know that revival has been accomplished when:
  1. Verse 35b."So the service of the temple of the LORD was reestablished."(NIV) When the points listed above have taken place in our lives, it can be said that our service to the Lord has been reestablished or set in order out of a pure heart.
  2. Verse 36."Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had brought about for his people, because it was done so quickly."(NIV) Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced. There will be a rejoiceing at what God has accomplished in our lives. When Nehemiah had completed his work of rebuilding the walls, in spite of the many hinderances from the enemy, the people realized that it was a work from God. When the work in our lives, the personal, honest and sincere walk with the Lord is "set in order" people who know you will indeed say this is a work from God. They will see a difference in us. Hopefully a true representation of, "Christ in you the hope of Glory."

IV. The Results of Revival2 Chron. 30

Revivals today are based on a one or two week series of meetings and are judged successful based on the number that have made decisions. The true result of revival is a changed life of the believer that is noticeable to those around you. It is a long-term, continuing change. Our lives are committed and steadfast to the Lord.
  1. Verse 1."And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel."(KJV) It was after the priest and Levites had been cleansed and the service set in order that Hezekiah reached out to others. When we are where we need to be in our relationship with the Lord will be begin to reach out to others. They will have seen a change in our attitude and character and realize that we are truly concerned.
  2. Verse 13."A very large crowd of people assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread..."(NIV) A result of revival is that many people return to the house of the Lord. People come to the Lord when they see we are serious and truly live what we believe. They will come to celebrate and remember the Death, Burial and Resurrection of out Lord. It is new life at its best.
  3. Verse 18-20."For a multitude of the people, even many of Ephraim, and Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet did they eat the passover otherwise than it was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, The good LORD pardon every one that prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary. And the LORD hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people."(KJV) The result of true revival is that many will be healed. Those who have not had a changed life or experienced the new birth will be converted. This does not happen by holding a week long series of services but by a committed and dedicated life of service to the Father.
  4. Verses 25-26."And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah, rejoiced. So there was great joy in Jerusalem:..."(KJV) The final result of true revival is a great rejoicing by all who came back. It is the fathers plan and purpose that we be a happy and rejoicing people. The things of the world or our possessions will have no affect on our joy. There will be a noticeable difference in the attitudes and conduct of God's people.

If we ever hope to see a change in the lives of others, there must first be a change in us. We must have a single vision, that of reconciling the world back to God. That reconciliation will only take place if Christ is truly alive in our temples. Paul said, God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself. This ministry of reconciliation was given to us. Therefore Christ must be in us reconciling the world to Himself. It is only when our life becomes His life that Christ will be "lifted up and draw all men unto Himself."
