Power of the Tongue

Theme: Ps. 62: 7-11
Text: Prov. 18:21

INTRODUCTION:
"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Believe it or not, God has given man more than just the ability to choose. But also to determine how our life-course will be. Prov 23: 7 says, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." What we say comes from what we believe which impacts our quality and length of days. Our speaking will be in direct relation to our faith (Matt.17:20; 21:21).

We are going to consider the power of our speech and conduct in relation to our physical wellbeing.

Consider the following verses of Scripture before we look at two important principles.

  1. We have a set alloted time to live on this earth. Job 14:5.
"Man's days are determined; You have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed."
Because we only have a particular amount of time to live, it is so important that we, as Christian, use that time very wisely and the words we speak will praise us or condemn us.

  2. We must trust in the Lord's providence Ps. 55:22-23.
"Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall. But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days."

  3. Our faithfulness to God may well extend out time. Prov. 9: 11
"For through Me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life."

  4. Don't take any chances. Prov. 10: 27
"The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short."

  5. What we say and how we act has an impact on our life. I Cor. 11:30
"That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep (died)."

And now, consider these two very important principles!

    Sowing (Planting) Principle:
    • Prov.11:18. "The wicked man earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward."
    • Prov. 22: 8. "He who sows wickedness reaps trouble"
    • Gal. 6:7-8. "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life."
If we plant a single seed of corn and it yields a stock with several ears and hundreds of kernels.

  1. Judging Principle:
    • Matt. 7: 1-2"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure (standards) you use, it will be measured (applied)to you."
(Conversely, do unto others as you would like others to do unto you)

CONCLUSION:
We should not judge motives, by appearance or another's convictions that are not in themselves right or wrong, the service of another Christian nor judge by speaking evil about another believer.
When we judge others by our own set of standards, inevitably, it will be applied to us now and at the Judgement Seat of Christ.
