While planning for a new pilot series being managed by the Tonight Show, NBC decided to do a live to tape broadcast from the NBA All Star Game. Since time was tight and pretty much every space in town had been booked weeks ahead the only choice was a dinner theater that had been slated for renovations.
Turning a 100 year old theater that was half full of demolition equipment into a sound stage was no small challenge. Finding power, rigging points and oh yeah...some sort of scenic look with no budget created challenges in all directions! Not to mention the need to provide sound and video projection for the live audience.
Having an intimate knowledge of both television production and the theater were a definite advantage for me as we put pen to paper and laid out everything that they were looking for in their event.
Oh and by the way...we were under budget by nearly 15%! Not something you hear every day in the world of television!
