| Contribution from Val Read in New Zeland, email address: [email protected] My McPhaiden family have been in Tiree since the birth of DONALD McPHAIDEN between 1695 and 1805. His wife is not known but there was a son RODERICK McPHAIDEN born between 1723 and 1739 in Salum, Tiree. Roderick married Margaret McLean and their children are as follows: Charles McPhaiden, b. about 1759 John McPhaiden, b. about 1761 Hugh McPhaiden, b. about 1765 Betty McPhaiden, born 26 April 1767 Anne McPhaiden, b. about 1771 Lauchlan McPhaiden, born 30 June 1773 Archibald McPhaiden, b. about 1774 My descendancy follows through JOHN McPHAIDEN, born about 1761. He married CATHERINE McLEAN on 20 November 1787 on the Isle of Coll but they came back to Tiree to have their family. Roderick McPhaiden born 27 April 1789 Archibald McPhaiden born 9 September 1790 Allan McPhaiden born 26 June 1792 Margaret McPhaiden born 28 May 1794 Flora McPhaiden born 22 March 1796 Mary McPhaiden born 5 April 1798 John McPhaiden born 21 February 1800 John McPhaiden born 18 August 1801 Alexander McPhaiden born 7 August 1802 and his twin Martin McPhaiden born 7 August 1802 Ann McPhaiden born 16 January 1804 Archibald McPhaiden born 11 December 1805 Malcolm McPhaiden born 19 April 1808 Alexander McPhaiden born 11 December 1810 Ann McPhaiden born 7 December 1812. Martin McPhaiden is my 2xgreat grandfather, he and his twin brother married sisters. Alexander married Helen Currie. Martin married JANET CURRIE in Salem on 4 December 1822. Their family is as follows: Donald McPhaiden, born 6 December 1824 Mary McPhaiden born 25 April 1827 John McPhaiden born 5 January 1829 Catharene McPhaiden born 4 April 1831 Niel McPhaiden born 15 December 1833 George McFadyen born 24 May 1840 Archibald McPhaiden born 15 February 1844 George is my great grandfather, he left Tiree sometime after the 1861 census and the next time I picked him up was when his first child was registered in Otago New Zealand in 1877. I have a strong feeling he went to Australia and spent some time there but as yet haven't found him coming into New Zealand. I haven't found a marriage for him in Australia or New Zealand, but his wife was Kattie Kavanagh, supposedly born in Victoria Australia (but I can't find the birth) and 17 years younger than George. The most precious document I have is a letter written to George in 1880 from Malcolm Livingstone on the isle of Tiree, George had written to him asking for a copy of his birth certificate and Malcolm wrote a long letter on the other side of the document, telling George all about family and friends on Tiree at the time. |
