...And now for something... completely different. Whoa! The CD-i on-line? Yes it's true. Through the wonderful addition of the Web-i modem & software, you can now surf the web and have access to all the world has to offer. Well... almost...

The Web-i helped the CD-i become the first console machine to surf the web (yes, months before Sega's Netlink. HA!!). While very limited in it's design, it still was quite functional. Offering (as you can see above) access to e-mail, newsgroups, and a reasonable web browser. With the loss of Web-i Land and the U.K.'s CD-Online sites, there are really very few sites left that really offer real Web-i support. But really, the Web-i could be considered the long, lost cousin to the WebTV. Nice features included in the browser upgrade CDs (available from CD-Online in the UK) were demo videos, promos for games, VCDs, and oddly... even beer
commercials. Saddly, the only MPEG it supported was not downloaded, but rather weblinks that triggered files already on the CD in your machine.

The second upgrade CD even featured a 3D corridor shooter similar in style to ATLANTIS: The Last Resort. They really did try to make the CD-i net experience fly. However, when it came right down to it, the web browser was slow and clunky, the modem was quite antiquated technology and it's connection to the CD-i through the controler port made for even slower results from it. Still if you must have it, the software is more readily available than the whole package. But due to it's design, getting similar hardware and making it work might not be as difficult as you
think. Members of the Collective have gotten other hardware to work with just a bit of time and trial and error. The only thing we couldn't get around was the CD-i splitter... but then... you already have one for two player games... right? heh. Overall, Web-i was just thinking ahead of it's time. Visionary... but flawed.
