It's the not-too-distant future. In this techno-industrial age, military and trade wars have become commonplace. Now, the manufacturing company, Electrocorp has a problem. An enemy corporation has infected their computer systems with the EGO-Virus. Now, their Supervisor android, has gone psycho and taken over. Now, it controls everything, even the other robots in the plant. No human can stop it. Thats ok... you're not human! You're a cyborg. Your assignment, go in and kick every metal butt, and re-take control. Easy... right?

Well, Rise of the Robots, sounds like it could have been a great game, but... uggh, what happened? Visually, it may look pretty, especially from the screen shots here, but it just doesn't. The designers seemed to not be able to balance between fluid animation, and actual gameplay, ending up with a pathetic attempt at character movements that seem overly rigid, even for mechanical creatures. Probably they should have waited to do RISE in 3D, rather than just make an attempt at a Mortal Kombat rip off. But thats just some 'blue skying' on my part.

Control is where the light of fighting games really need to shine, saddly, this is a REAL dim bulb. Your offense is controled mostly by button 1. Just hit it while pushing a direction on the D-Pad and viola (ie. Forward+button 1= Punch hold button to repeat). This is the primary reason we reccomend the 4-Button pad. Since it is the least touchy for diagonals, but it just barely makes this game playable... but not enjoyable. Combined with the odd colision routine, just walking at an enemy and punching and sweep kicking will usually get you a win, especially against the MILITARY and SENTRY bots.

The music provided by Brian May of QUEEN fame is quite nice, but a couple problems were very noticable. The music is chopped up durring the videos, and stops while the next one loads. Wouldn't be so bad, excpet it loads very OFTEN. The other problem is, this is the only version of the game I've seen with the Rise 2 soundtrack on it. I've played all the others, and really was surprized by an odd change like that. While I did like both soundtracks, it doesn't make much sence to have RESSURECTION playing as it's opening theme.

The sound effects, while not really impressive, do convey a decent clang or thump you might associate with a robo-fighter. Much better than the tinman clanky sounds of the SNES version.

To sum it up, its an attempt at a fighter for CD-i. Not the best effort, but seing what became of all the other versions of this title, it's not the worst of the lot. If the control weren't so bad, the rest might make an occasionally playable game.
