ABC Sports presents THE PALM SPRINGS OPEN. A rather profound and bold sounding title, but thats as far as it goes. This early CD-i title really doesn't show much in the way of promise. However, we at the Collective took it upon ourselves to test this supposedly fun golf challenge.
Graphicly, the images are crisp and animation is smooth. However, its just not impressive. Really just mediocre play, and the course maps are very cheap looking, as you can see. Also, even light hits when driving seem to fly for a long distance. Putting is almost impossible due to the lack of real detail in the landscape presentation, and the fact you always seem to be putting from the same place on the green.

The announcers, while briefly entertaining, become more annoying with their dated comments, and the fact that you cannot bypass what they have to say before each shot. Making it more annoying is the fact that you cannot move the cursor or begin play until the announcers shut up. NOT GOOD. Control, what there is of it, is pathetic. You feel as though you're just helping the guy swing, but he's got everything under control. No aiming, no stance control, and the map view is no real help at all.

To sum it up, no real gameplay, annoying sound, and no really outstanding graphics all add up to a really disappointing game. Buy it only if you're a truely diehard golf fan, a CD-i collector who must have every title, or just need another CD coaster.
Caution: May cause drowsyness and/or boredom. Do not operate heavy machinery or drive a car after (or durring) play. HA!!!
