Rose Hulman def. Greenville (3-1)
6-15, 4-15, 15-6, 11-15
(9/29/00 at Greenville)

September 29th - Greenville finished up their 6 game homestand with yet another tough match, this time against Rose Hulman. The Engineers had rolled to a straight set victory over the Panthers just two weeks ago at their own tournament, but Greenville fought a tough battle despite the loss Friday night. Michea McKay had a record night for Greenville with 28 kills including a .490 hitting percentage. "We just showed up a little too late tonight," remarked Coach Rick McPeak. "We dropped those first two games and then we played great, but we just had too much ground to gain."

In games one and two it looked like Rose Hulman would roll to another 3-set win with Rose winning 6-15 and 4-15. "They came out and played very well early and we really didn't have anything to slow them down," added McPeak.

In game three Greenville simply refused to give the match away as they came out firing early. Megan Vandiver got a big block to give Greenville a 4-1 lead and then they turned to Michea McKay for a series of sideouts. McKay pounded 4 kills early to stop any Rose Hulman offense, and another Vandiver block gave Greenville a 6-2 lead and forced Rose into a timeout. The timeout did no good however as McKay was too much to handle all game and helped to extend the lead to 12-3 and eventually a 15-6 victory. McKay finished the game with 8 kills on only 13 attempts including 5 consecutive at one point.

Game four looked like much of the same early as McKay banged out 5 straight kills to start the set and give Greenville the 6-5 lead. Rose Hulman battled right back taking the next four points and forcing Greenville to take a timeout trailing 6-9. Behind some more powerful offense from McKay, Greenville grabbed an 11-10 lead only to see Rose Hulman take the final five points to take the set 11-15 and win the match. In game four McKay had another amazing individual effort with 10 kills and only one error on 16 attempts.

For the match, Michea McKay put together a tremendous match despite the loss. McKay finished with a record 28 kills (18 over the final two games) with only 4 errors and a hitting percentage of .490. "The stats speak for themselves," remarked McPeak. "In game three and four she was just unstoppable. She had several stretches where she put down 4 or 5 balls in a row and they are a pretty solid blocking team."

"Even though Michea's stats were as good as they were, this was truly a team effort tonight. Sarah played another good match for us (13 kills) and was very aggressive on serve receive which helped set up Michea's offense. Heather had another very solid game setting for us tonight and continues to be a steady influence on our team."

"I am really proud of the way we played tonight," added McPeak. "It's easy to play well early and then let down, but it's so difficult to play poor early and then pick it up, especially against a team playing as well as they were. Hopefully this will carry into the next game for us."

Greenville will travel to Lincoln Christian on Tuesday for their first road match in almost two weeks.
