September 26th - A very wild match concluded with an unfortunate loss on Tuesday, but the Lady Panthers had nothing to hang their heads about. "That was our best team effort all year," remarked Coach Rick McPeak. "That was definitely some of the most fun volleyball I have seen in a long time and our girls should be proud of the way we played tonight."
Greenville hosted Illinois College in
a rematch game Tuesday night. Greenville had lost to Illinois
College at the Rose Hulman Tournament just 11 days ago in straight
sets, but Tuesday's match was much different
than the first meeting. The Lady Panthers
came out very aggressive and seemed to catch the opponents off-guard
as they cruised to a quick 15-9 win in game one. G.C. was unable
to keep momentum into game two as they fell behind early 1-10
and lost 5-15.
What followed would be one of the best
sets in Greenville volleyball history. After trailing 4-11, Greenville
clawed back into the game slowly and eventually ran off 8 straight
points and took a 12-11 lead. Illinois College fired back with
three consecutive points and was serving for the game at 14-12.
A big sideout and back-to-back points tied the match and a huge
Michea McKay kill put Greenville ahead 15-14. Once again Illinois
College was able to hold off G.C. and the two teams continued
to battle back and forth with dramatic rallies and big defensive
plays. With Greenville up 18-17, they seemed to finally run out
of gas as they dropped the final three points to drop the set
18-20. The set lasted nearly 50 minutes with the game being tied
at 15, 16, 17, and 18 and each team serving for the set 4 times.
"That was just such a tough game to lose," added McPeak.
"To come
back from that big
of a deficit against a team that good was just great for our girls."
Game four resembled game two as Greenville never got on track and dropped the game 7-15. Illinois College improved their record to 11-4 this season in what may have been their best match of the season as well. "They were definitely the best team we've seen all year and they brought their A game tonight," added McPeak. "We were able to match their intensity and their effort, but their maturity and ability to run all kinds of offensive sets really hurt us. You can't be satisfied with a loss, but our girls have nothing to be disappointed about after this match. It's that kind of effort that is going to win us a lot of matches."
Michea McKay led the Greenville offense once again with a season-high 22 kills. Greenville got some strong play in the middle from Julia Wheeler and Megan Vandiver who each had 6 kills and Vandiver had 3 block assists as well. Kristi Harms had a great match on the weak side for G.C. finishing with 6 kills on just 12 attempts.
Greenville continues a long homestand
with two more very difficult matches this week. On Wednesday they
will face conference favorite Westminster and then will play Rose
Hulman on Friday. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
