Here is the first of many Rookie Reports. This highlight the professional starts of players selected in the first 2 rounds of the 2003 OOBL Rookie Draft. The letter at the end of the stat lines is the level at which the player plays.
All stats are current through 5/27/2003 (league date).

San Diego

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
J Shingleton   47 183  48  4  0  6  19  19  10  40 .262 .311 .383 A
J Zircon       48 168  32  3  3  0   9  19  13  38 .190 .257 .244 A

At 19, Shingleton is the top prospect in the Padre system and his first performance in pro ball is backing it up. He should be a fixture in the heart of San Diego's line-up in a few years. Zircon reportedly joined the mysterious Gem Cult and has changed his name and apparently his swing. He could be an above average player in time.

Detroit

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
R Cruz         50 190  40  9  0  8  20  28  23  36 .211 .299 .384 AA
J Perry        49 173  34  5  2  5  16  19  11  36 .197 .249 .335 A

Cruz should make the show very soon. He already posses big-league power and surprising plate discipline. Give him a year or two and AL pitchers BEWARE. Perry will get a chance because of his amazing arm, but will need to work on his skills with the lumber if he wants to be more than a career backup.

Cleveland
Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
H Dick         51 188  32  5  0  5  16  18  13  47 .170 .250 .277 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
P Vieira        9  9  1  3  0  3.79  59.1  64  29  25  18  63 AA
O Machuca       9  9  4  4  0  3.47  62.1  65  25  24  21  38 A

Dick has some potential but won't be a star. He is really struggling so far this year. Number 1 pitchers are hard to come by but Cleveland looks to have found one in Viera. His 3 pitch assortment is already baffling hitters on the AA level. He is probably two years from a starting job in the majors. Machuca is already 24 and will need to develop quickly. He does seem to have good potential but the clock is ticking.

Anaheim

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
R Hammond      47 138  39  6  0  3  16  12  24  32 .283 .389 .391 A

Hammond has had no problem in A ball and will soon earn a promotion. He has big time power and just needs to work on his bat control to start making big bucks.

Kansas City
L Dee          10 10  6  2  0  5.05  67.2  79  40  38  21  42 A

Dee is only 19, but doesn't look to be #1 starter material. He is young though and should have several years to grow in the KC farm system.

Florida

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
T Bueche       49 181  51  6  0  4  20  24  22  27 .282 .366 .381 A
E Darrington   40 161  26  7  0  4  13  15  10  30 .161 .206 .280 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
T Harless       6  6  1  4  0 10.17  25.2  54  32  29   9  16 A
R Zavala        3  3  0  2  0  2.45  22.0  22   8   6   6  15 A

Bueche will be an outstanding ML'er, but few thought he'd start this quickly. If he can increase his power while maintaining the surprising discipline he's shown so far, he could be ready quickly. Darrington looks like little more than an average outfielder. He may never be a big hitter but is adequate in the field and on the basepaths. Harless is another outstanding pitching prospect in the Marlin system. Scouts are baffled as to why he's giving up over 2 hits per inning and expect him to turn things around. Marlin officials say that he's a tough kid and shouldn't let this rough start bother him. Traded from Philly, Zavala fractured his hand early in the season. Doctors say he shouldn't suffer any lingering affects and should have a future in the majors.

New York(N)

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
F Washington   50 166  29  3  0  1   4   8  11  32 .175 .229 .211 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
R Judy          8  8  2  6  0  2.30  62.2  56  16  16  16  36 A
P Cruz          9  9  4  5  0  1.53  76.2  53  14  13  17  57 A
G Wilson        5  5  0  4  0  3.29  38.1  24  14  14  13  21 A

Washington is not outstanding but with good defense and fundamentals should contribute. Young southpaw Judy, has gotten out to a great start. His good control is making up for a lack of velocity. Cruz is quickly making a name for himself in the Met front office. He should continue to develop into a quality starter. Wilson is another soft-thrower who doesn't get many strikeouts. He will need to continue to hit his spots to get the job done.

Pittsburgh

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
A Hauser       49 191  53  7  1 14  29  29  14  35 .277 .330 .545 A
A King         43 138  38  6  0  2  18  14   8  37 .275 .329 .362 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
T Woods         6  6  2  4  0  5.11  44.0  48  26  25  16  37 A

Hauser has been crushing baseballs in Lynchburg. At only 170lbs many wonder where the power comes from. His start has been a bit of a surprise but his talent is real. The trade from Houston has not slowed King. The 19-year-old 2B is raw but could be a future All-Star. Woods (Todd not Tiger) has a pretty good right arm to work with. He's just 19 so he will have some time to learn how to use it.

Milwaukee

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
B Conley        9  9  3  1  0  1.99  68.0  63  15  15  13  57 A

Conley has done a fine job so far in A ball. He could develop into a middle to bottom of the rotation starter.

Tampa Bay
Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
E Gass         47 180  33  5  0  2   7  13   8  32 .183 .222 .244 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
W Marrone       8  8  3  2  0  2.73  56.0  48  18  17  11  51 A
C Ramsey        8  8  4  3  0  3.63  62.0  48  26  25  24  51 AA

Gass has had trouble adjusting to pro pitching but should be OK as a utility type player. Scouts have been pleased with Marrone's better than expected control. If he can continue to pitch like this he could crack Tampa's rotation in a couple years. Ramsey went straight to AA and has not disappointed. At times he's looked like a future ace. Some scouts feel he could start 2004 in a D-Ray uni.

Cincinnati

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
P Perez        43 149  29  6  0 11  26  14   7  23 .195 .236 .456 AA
M Smith        50 189  46  7  1  5  24  21  13  38 .243 .306 .370 A

Perez probably was the most powerful player in the draft. Fans in Chattanooga are still waiting on some of his homers to fall from orbit. However, he still needs work as pitchers routinely exploit a hole in his swing. Smith is renowned for Odonez like defense but scouts feel he may one day anchor a batting lineup. Lightning fast, look for him to develop his baserunning and maybe be a 30/30 guy.

Toronto

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
M Carlino      51 174  30  1  0 10  24  22  19  35 .172 .258 .351 A
T Stottlemyre  51 181  45  6  0  6  15  19  12  34 .249 .303 .381 A

Stottlemyre Jr. has his father's name but wants to become known for his bat. He looks like a good prospect and if he can shake the injury bug should be OK. Carlino has flashed some of the power potential that made Toronto pick him in the first round. However, he seems to have lost some of his discipline at the plate. Rumors abound that the Jays are bringing in hypnotists to help him get his eye back.

Baltimore

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
J Magness      50 189  55  8  2  5  20  25  20  38 .291 .365 .434 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
D Rosenberger   9  9  3  5  0  8.10  43.1  89  48  39   8  23

Oriole brass hope that the recent name change for Rosenberger, will stimulate the young lefty. His recently strained back should just be a minor setback and is not thought to be serious. Magness has the potential to be a big-time power hitter. So far he's showing better than expected plate presence as well.

Atlanta
Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
W Taylor       33  33  11  0  0  0   5   3   5   7 .333 .436 .333  A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
M Solorio       9  9  3  4  0  3.95  68.1  61  30  30  31  46 A

Many in baseball expected Taylor to develop quite rapidly. However, single A manager Randy Ingle, has been reluctant to give the 1st round pick playing time. This would seem to suggest that rumors of a manager/player conflict might be well founded. Taylor is quite talented and will be a solid major leaguer barring injuries or personal problems. Solorio is off to a good start, which does not surprise many. He is a quality prospect and with continued growth will have a good career.

Colorado

Texas

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
C Orosco        9  9  6  2  0  3.91  69.0  72  30  30  18  34 A
L Medeiros      8  8  3  4  0  6.29  48.2  56  36  34  16  43 A

Orosco could develop into a star. His only weakness is the lack of an overpowering fastball but that can be overcome (ask Greg Maddux). Medeiros is only 18, but has performed decently so far. Some feel he will blossom into a special pitcher over the next 3 or 4 years.

Montreal

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
H Pena         43  69  17  0  0  1   4   5   7   9 .246 .316 .290 A
M Sandstrom    50 189  41  4  0  6  21  13  13  33 .217 .278 .333 A
M Grasso       50 172  31  2  0  2  10  13  20  19 .180 .277 .227 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
D Morrison      9  1  2  1  0  1.54  11.2   6   2   2   0  12 A

Pena is expected to develop into a very good catcher. He has no real weakness at the plate and has the rare ability to hit any pitch with authority. Sandstrom's average defense at SS, is more than balanced by his power at the plate. Some scouts look for him to one day win a HR crown. With his 6'4" 210lb frame a move to third may be in the works. Grasso is a slick fielding 1B with limited pop. He may have a hard time getting attention over more powerful players. Morrison is a  MR who many feel is better as a starter. At 19, he's got good potential and bears watching.

Philadelphia
Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
J Mingo         8  8  3  2  0  4.30  52.1  63  27  25  14  34 AA

Mingo could be the steal of the draft. Though struggling a bit now, scouts are awed by his talent and composure. Already in AA he could be ready sometime next year.

San Francisco

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
W Malave       49 187  44  5  3  2  22  19  16  39 .235 .319 .326 A
R Paniagua     50 181  40  4  1  3  16  16  20  30 .221 .312 .304 A

Los Angeles

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
F Thomas        9  9  3  5  0  2.57  63.0  63  21  18  11  47 A
J Merlino       8  8  2  6  0  6.51  47.0  64  35  34  16  36 A

Minnesota

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
J Balas        49 162  31  6  0  1   7  13  14  32 .191 .264 .247 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
S Melendez      9  9  1  8  0  7.79  54.1  71  51  47  25  35 A

Balas has shown limited ability so far. He is a good baserunner, but will need to improve his defense and hitting to be more than a marginal player. Melendez has been getting shelled in A ball. Many don't expect that to last long as he is a gifted prospect. The tall (6'4") lefty should turn things around and be a contributer at the major league level in a few years.

Oakland

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
J Davis        30  37   8  1  0  0   3   1   4   5 .216 .302 .243 A

Davis is a 19 year old SS who does everything well in the batter's box except swing for power. His defense leaves something to be desired but many feel that if he can live up to his potential it will be easy to overlook.

New York (A)

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
M Dunmire      44 165  28  7  0  5  15  20  30  43 .170 .301 .303 A
B Caceres      43 154  32  8  1  8  29  19  11  30 .208 .261 .429 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
J Hall          8  8  4  2  0  3.36  64.1  54  24  24  22  42 A

Sources say Caceres was overjoyed to be traded to his favorite childhood team. That may explain why he sometimes seems to be pressing. The 18 year old SS, possess good speed, outstanding defense and good power as well. Some Yankee fans have been disappointed with Dunmire as often he looks pretty terrible at the plate. His is a good defensive catcher and will draw his share of walks. Scouts expect great things of Hall. He will be a workhorse and is already learning how to pitch. Few have anything at all negative to say about him.

Boston
Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
O Gutierrez    49 173  37  4  1  4  12  12  20  37 .214 .299 .318 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
C Guido         9  9  4  3  0  5.52  60.1  75  40  37  14  34 AA

Gutierrez looks to be a solid catching prospect. He does most everything well at the plate and can handle a pitching staff. Guido has seemed overmatched at times in AA. But scouts love the guy. Only 19, he already has big-league control of his pitches. The only knock on him is he has been known to get nagging injuries. Red Sox officials have already talked with him about training with Pedro in the offseasons.

St. Louis

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
P Stahlman     49 201  51  8  4  3  27  27  12  29 .254 .302 .378 A
J Mcdowell     46 164  42  7  0  0  19  14  14  31 .256 .322 .299 A

Young (18) and talented Stahlman should get a chance to play in McGwire's spot at 1B. The Cardinal front office is pleased with his development so far. Stahlman is an athletic OF with excellent hitting skills. With his speed, a batting title could be in his future.

Seattle

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
W Benitez      13  0  3  0  8  1.65  16.1   7   3   3   2  22 A

After dominating single-A hitters Benitez has been promoted to AA. Many feel he will be a bona-fide ML closer by spring training next year. He should be the first draft pick to make a mark on a ML team.

Arizona

Name            G  AB   H 2B 3B HR RBI   R  BB   K  AVG  OBP  SLG
B Wormley      49 179  39  7  0  2  22  14  21  34 .218 .324 .291 A

Name            G GS  W  L  S   ERA    IP  HA   R  ER  BB   K
J Wells        19  0  1  1 13  2.78  22.2  25   7   7   8  19 AA

Baseball men shudder when a ball is hit to Wormley at 2B. If he can correct his defensive deficiencies he could be a fine MLer. Big (6'4" 210) righty Wells will soon be a big league closer. Armed with a blazing fastball, and absolutely wicked slider he can dominate. Scouts say he has the perfect mentality for a closer and lives for the big moments.
