Beth Stein, Liz Tran and Jessica Lee paced Marshall to a fourth-place finish out of 25 schools in the Medium Schools Varsity girls race at the Bull Run Invitational in Hereford, Md. on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Stein, who earned a long-awaited medal for her performance, placed 10th in 22:25, followed by Tran in 16th (22:39) and Lee in 22nd (23:08).
Nataliar King (48th, 25:17) and Christy Friend (55th, 25:41) rounded out the scoring for the girls team, which finished just 20 points out of the renowned top three team places.
Zoe Van Gelder (6th JV, 25:27), Angela Carrato (14th JV, 26:32) and Jesica Nunez (74th Varsity, 26:40) also turned in especially impressive performances on the girls side.
Doug Shapiro got his season off to an outstanding start by finishing 18th out of the 170 runners in the Medium Schools Varsity boys race. His time of 18:27 was nearly a minute faster than his performance last year at this meet.
The Marshall boys finished eighth out of 26 schools, a mere 16 points separating them from a top-five team spot.
Justin Harper (42nd, 19:13) and Irving Duncan (70th, 20:05) were among the other boys with excellent performances in the varsity race, while Charlie Palen won the JV Boys race in a time of 19:32.
