Sunrise on Planet Earth- July 15, 2008

The first visible image of Hurricane Bertha on the morning of July 15, 2008. Notice the well defined eye and the red dot that indicates the island of Bermuda to the southwest of the center of the storm. High surf is forecast again today for Cape Cod and New England, although the riptide advisory has been lifted for the Jersey Shore and the Mid-Atlantic beaches.
Another thing to note about this GOES-E satellite image is the extreme angle the earth's shadow is making with respect to the east coast of the USA. It's almost a full month after the summer solstice, but the north pole is still tilted in the direction of the sun. A month from now that angle will be much shallower and will start to change rapidly until the opposite becomes true. Look at the line where the GOES-E and GOES-W satellite pictures overlap, apparently in the vicinity of the Great Lakes. I think it is interesting that at the time of this image, the sun was already up over the Great Lakes, and reflecting off the surface of Lake Huron on the edge of the picture, while the southeast coast from Virginia to Florida was still in darkness.
