Entry for October 28, 2007
I just observed comet Holmes again and it appears to have a double nucleus! If so, that would explain the explosion that caused it to brighten so suddenly. Observing from my back yard at 7:55 PM with a small 4 inch refractor at low power, I could swear I saw TWO starlike nuclei inside the coma, but it could be that one of the starlike points was a background star. I am hoping that other astronomers will be able to confirm this. Stay tuned!

Well, it turned out to be a background star seen shining through the coma, but that's okay. The idea of a double nucleus was exciting while it lasted. Meanwhile the Red Sox won the world series and the Patriots beat the Redskins. I'm sure the irony will not be lost on anyone that the last time the Red Sox won, there was a lunar eclipse, and this time, comet Holmes had its outburst at almost the exact start of the World Series, and continued to be a naked eye object all during the four game sweep! So once again, the Boston team's fate is linked to the stars. But at least this time the Boston Police didn't shoot anyone in the face(!). Only a FEW cars were overturned in Back Bay, and the BPD showed restraint.
