CUMBERLAND
Carl Vincent VanMeter, 83, of 11114 Valley Road, NE, Cumberland, died on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Memorial Hospital.

Born on April 6, 1918, in Maysville, W.Va., he was the son of the late James VanMeter and Carrie (Stump) VanMeter. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Stanley and Cranston VanMeter.

Mr. VanMeter was retired from Local No. 37 Operating Engineers and Heavy Equipment Operators with 55 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, S. Christine (Twigg) VanMeter; and a son, Steven Vincent VanMeter and wife Susan, Paw Paw, W.Va.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis F. Dayhoff officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers for Mr. Van Meter will be Ronnie White, Harold Knotts, Dale VanMeter, Dewaine Weaver, Kenneth Carder and James Diehl.

CARPENDALE, W.Va. 
Goldie A. VanMeter, 82, formerly of Carpendale, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at the Cortand Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, W.Va.

Born May 23, 1917, in Bayard, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Hazel (Likens) Gaither. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Stanley M. VanMeter, in 1978; and one half-brother, Melvin McDonald.

Mrs. VanMeter was a member of the Ridgeley Senior Citizens.

Survivors include two sons, Robert M. VanMeter, Ridgeley, Darrell VanMeter, Cresaptown; one daughter, Sylvia McClellan, LaVale; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edward R. Dickel, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

CUMBERLAND -
Otha C. VanMeter, 61, of Cumberland, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.

Born July 26, 1937, in Maysville, W.Va., he was the son of the late George and Rosa (Rohrbaugh) VanMeter. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Chester VanMeter; and one sister, Mae Reed.

Mr. VanMeter was employed by the City of Cumberland at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. He was Protestant by faith.

Surviving are three sons, Larry C. VanMeter and wife, Debbie, Cumberland, Lonald R. VanMeter, Cumberland, and Donald W. VanMeter and wife, Sherry, Oldtown; his special friend, Gloria J. Rice, Cumberland; his former wife, Eleanor Steward, Cumberland; two sisters, Mary Gottlieb, Cumberland, and Ellen Bock, Cumberland; and one brother, Tracey VanMeter, Cumberland; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Thursday at 1 p.m.

Interment will be in Mount Tabor Cemetery, Spring Gap.

FLINTSTONE 
Zernie A. VanMeter, 76, of Flintstone, died Friday, July 2, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.

Born June 26, 1923, in Petersburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George and Lula (Nelson) Self. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Enoch L. VanMeter; three sisters, Mildred Mooney, Vernie Ash, Vicey Kimble; two brothers, Will Self, Raymond Self; and one grandson, Gregory Allen Pifer.

Mrs. VanMeter was a former owner and operator of VanMeter's Grocery in Flintstone, and was a member of Glendale Brethren Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Hazel M. Ryan and husband, William, Flintstone, Doris Tippens, Woodstock, Ga., Janet Mallow, Cumberland; one son, George A. Fogle and wife, Julia, Clearville, Pa.; four brothers, Alvin Self, Earl Self, both of Flintstone, Jonas Self, Cletus Self, both of Cumberland; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Richard Ketterman officiating.

Interment will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Donald L. VanMeter, 65, of Olathe, Kansas, and formerly of Petersburg, died April 14, 2002 at his home from ALS.

Born June 27, 1936, in Petersburg, he was the son of Willard VanMeter of Petersburg and the late Garrett VanMeter.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joyce VanMeter; two sons, Mark VanMeter of Tampa, Fla. and Kevin Tawzer of Wichita, Kansas; four daughters, Sheri Rawlings of Independence, Mo., Donna Hursttman of Bates City, Mo., Marjorie Tawzer-Overbeck of Wellington, Colo. and Candace Tawzer of Osage City, Kansas; three brothers, Gary Van Meter of Fort Worth, Texas, Ed VanMeter of Petersburg and George VanMeter of Fort Collins, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

At his request, his body was cremated.

A Celebration of Life service was April 17, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home chapel.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Plauger) VanMeter, 88, of Petersburg, W.Va., died March 18, 2002 at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, where she had resided since Aug. 8, 2000.

Born Oct. 26, 1913, in Petersburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Grover Plauger and Cynthia (Graham) Plauger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence W. VanMeter, Aug. 27, 1999.

She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia "Vickie" Stump and husband, David, of Petersburg, W.Va.; three granddaughters, Toni Hedrick and husband, Tom, of Petersburg, W.Va., Amanda Fleming and husband, Allen of Petersburg, W.Va. and Paula Gerstell and husband, C.T., of Statesville, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Traci Hedrick; one stepgreat-grandson, T.J. Hedrick; two nephews, George Plauger of Petersburg, W.Va. and Harry R. Plauger of New Freedom, Pa., and one niece, Alice Hawse of Wardensville, W.Va.

Funeral services were March 21, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg, W.Va.

John Henry VanMeter, 63, of Upper Tract, died March 24, 2002 at his home.

Born Dec. 25, 1938, at Onego, he was the son of Lossie VanMeter of Upper Tract and the late Joy (Huffman) VanMeter.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra (Poole) VanMeter, whom he married Sept. 2, 1979; seven daughters, Pamela Joy Corneso and Tonya Cozart, both of Akron, Ohio, Tamara Sipple, Teresa Penny VanMeter and Lisa Singer, all of Norton, Ohio, Jackie Arbogast of Arbovale and Rachael VanMeter of Upper Tract; one son, Ronald Thompson of Petersburg; two sisters, Bonnie Knight of Akron and Joann Street of Massillon, Ohio; three brothers, Jim VanMeter of Akron, Garry VanMeter of Lewisville, Ohio and Warren VanMeter of Franklin; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service was March 26, at the Kimble Funeral Home chapel, Franklin.

Arno Eugene Van Meter, 61, of Petersburg, died Dec. 9,  2000 at his residence.

Born Aug. 28, 1939, in Petersburg, he was the son of Mary Van Meter. He was also preceded in death by aunts Dessie Van Meter and Janie Bobo, with whom he lived as a child.

He is survived by one sister, Yvonne Crites of Petersburg; one brother, Dale Van Meter of Lexington Park, Md.; and companion, Madeline Carr of Woodbridge, Va.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Interment will be South Branch Memorial Gardens, Petersburg.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg.

A haying accident claimed the life of a Dorcas man Friday (June 20, 1980) in a field near Petersburg.

John C. Vance, 54, was preparing to bale hay on a lot he owned in Meadow Ridge subdivision when he was crushed under one of the wheels of the tractor. According to Grant County medical examiner, Dr. John C. Glover, Vance apparently fell in front of the wheel while trying to climb onto the tractor.

Grover estimated the time of the accident at between 6:45 and 7 p.m.

Born November 13, 1925 in Grant County, Vance was the son of the late Edward M. and Virginia (Crites) Vance.

Surviving are his widow, Anna J. (Alt) Vance; three sons, Larry W. Vance of Petersburg, Steve A. Vance of Upper Tract, and Eddie Vance of Dorcas; six daughters, Mrs. Norma Smith, Mrs. Linda Ours and Mrs. Karen Ours of Dorcas, Mrs. Donna Faye Evans of Cabins, Mrs. Sherry Evans of Petersburg, and Miss Jackie Vance at home; seven sisters, Mrs. Goldie Huffman of Petersburg, Mrs. Grace Sites of Winchester, Va., Mrs. Ethel Hines, Mrs. Rosella Thorne, Mrs. Lena Thorne, Mrs Ruth Whetzel and Mrs. Elsie Sites, all of Dorcas; two brothers, Fred Vance of Winchester and Glenn Vance of Dorcas and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, an infant son and an infant grandchild.

Services were conducted Monday in the Schaeffer Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Glenn Vance and Rev, Joseph Eversole. Interment was in Crites Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of Flowers, memorial should be made to the Crites Cemetery.

Fred W. Vance, 72, of Winchester, Va., formerly of Dorcas, was pronounced dead on arrival Tuesday, Feb. 15, 1983 at Winchester Memorial Hospital.

Born in Dorcas July 1, 1910, he was a son of the late Edward Vance and Virginia (Crites) Vance. He was also preceded in death by seven brothers.

Mr. Vance was retired from the Plumley Lumber Co. of Winchester, Va.

He is survived by three sons, Frederick James "Junior" Vance, Berryville, Va., Woodrow A. Vance, Winchester, Va., Dorse D. Vance, Woodbridge, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Martha Hinkle, New Creek, Mrs. Wanda VanMeter, Burlington, Mrs. Lucy Rotruck, Keyser; seven sisters, Mrs. Goldie Huffman, Mrs. Lena Thorne, Mrs. Elsie Sites and Mrs. Rose Thorne, all of Petersburg, Mrs. Ethel Hines and Mrs. Ruth Whetzel, both of Dorcas, Mrs. Grace Sites, Winchester, Va.; one brother Glen H. Vance, Sr., Dorcas; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service were held Friday afternoon at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Scott officiating. Interment was in the Crites family cemetery at Dorcas.

Active pallbearers were Gene Vance, Glen Vance, Jr., Dick Huffman, Junior Whetzel, Harold Hines and Larry Vance.

Emmett Henry Van Meter, 78, of Winchester, Va., died Tuesday, March 22, 1994 at a local nursing home.

Born March 17, 1916, at Landes, he was the son of the late Andy H. and Bertha (Judy) Van Meter.

Mr. Van Meter had been a Secton at Christ Episcopal Church for 22 years and was a member there.

Surviving are his wife, Leona (Riggleman) Van Meter, whom he married April 21, 1924; two sons, Lloyd Van Meter and Earl E. Van Meter, both of Winchester; two brothers, Herbert Van Meter of Maysville and Okey Van Meter of Landes; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Friday morning at the Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. David H. Knight officiating. Interment was in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Youth Ministry Fund, Christ Episcopal Church, 134 West Boscawen Street, Winchester, Va 22601.   Arrangements were under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home, Winchester.

William Thomas VanMeter, 76, of Elk Garden, died Thursday, Feb 17, 1994, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, Md.

Born September 6, 1917, in Grant County, he was the son of the late William and Minnie (Rohrbaugh) VanMeter.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Julia M. (Mayers) VanMeters, September 1993; one son, Gene VanMeter in 1961; two sisters, Alice Keplinger, January 22 and Ora Truettle; and five brothers, Claude VanMeter, Jeff VanMeter, Hiram VanMeter, Charles VanMeter and George VanMeter.

He is survived by Four sons, Harrison VanMeter, Emoryville, Judas VanMeter and wife, Sandy, Mt. Storm, and Kenneth VanMeter and wife, Iva, Crellin; two daughters, Sharon Paugh and husband, Sam, Emoryville; Barbara Rinker and husband, Russell, Gorman; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, Md., Sunday afternoon, with the Rev. Donald E. Marple officiating. Interment was in Kalbaugh Cemetery, Elk Garden.
