| Grant County, WV Obits L Index LAHMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Velma Catherine (Halterman) Lahman, age 77, of Lahmansville, W.Va., died Friday, June 4, 1999, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, W.Va., after a lingering illness of rheumatoid arthritis. Born Sept. 12, 1921, in Westernport, Md., she was a daughter of the late Oscar C. and Alma E. (Hawk) Halterman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson S. ``Red'' Lahman, Aug. 13, 1964; and one brother, Earl C. Halterman, Nov. 2, 1983. Mrs. Lahman was formerly employed by Fort Hill Drive-In, Snell Oil Co. and V.R. Mowry Inc. of Petersburg, W.Va. She was valedictorian of Petersburg High School Class of 1938, a member of Lahmansville United Methodist Church, and American Legion Auxiliary Post 78 of Petersburg, W.Va. Surviving are one daughter, Sandra L. Mowry and husband ``Sonny'' of Petersburg, W.Va.; one son, Gary N. Lahman and wife Diane of Lahmansville, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Richard N. Smith Landis who died June 2, 1999; five brothers; and two sisters. Mr. Landis was a furnace operator with Kaiser Aluminum in Baltimore, Md. Leatherman, July 13, 1985; one brother, Frank J. Allessio; and two sisters, Susie Allessio and Mary Sue Allessio. Mrs. Leatherman was a member of the Knobley Church of the Brethren and Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454 Ladies Auxiliary. She attended Antioch Church of God. Surviving are four sons, Paul A. Born March 30, 1918, in Lahmansville, he was the son of the late Jacob Stanley and Fannie Elizabeth (Patch) Lahman. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eva (Keplinger) Lahman, Dec. 31, 1990. He is survived by two sons, Keith Lahman and Wayne Lahman, both of Petersburg; three daughters, Elaine VanMeter, Sharon Feaster and Nancy Carr, all of Petersburg; one sister, Ada McDonald of Maysville; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Landes was born April 10, 1906, in Upper Tract and was a son of the late Elmer and Hadie Alice Helmick Landes. He operated the Atlantic Gas and Grocery Store in Short Gap for several years. His wife, Martha Boswell Landes, died July 20, 1971. Surviving are a companion, Phyllis High, Purgitsville; a son, Harlan Landes, Lahmansville; a step-son Charlie Boswell, Romney; two daughters, Eulda Mayle, Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin, and Loretta Malcolm, Marlinton; a sister, Edna Kimble, Arthur; 22 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was employed at the Pizza Hut in Petersburg for nine and one half years and was Protestant by faith. Mr. Landis was a retired school bus driver for the Mineral County Board of Education and a farmer. He also served as a deputy assessor for Mineral County. He was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and a Sunday school teacher. Surviving are one son, Lyle W. He had been in ill health the past three years, but was able to be about. He was the son of the late Hiram T. and Mary Jane (Smith) Leatherman and was born in Grant County. He was a retired Tannery worker. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Martha V. (Heishman Leatherman, one son, Lee B. Leatherman, and three daughters, Mrs. Lola Burgess, Mrs. Rayma King, and Miss Violet H. Leatherman, all of Keyser. Eight grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the Knobley Church of the Brethren. Rev. A. R. Showalter will officiate. Interment will be in Knobley Cemetery. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Long, February 28, 1983, whom she married December 29, 1932, in Parsons; two sons, Harry L. Long and Joseph F. Long; five brothers, Grover Lee Keister, Ole Clinton Keister, Roy Jennings Keister, Austin Carl Keister and Fred Herbert Keister; and four sisters, Mervie Edith Keister, Mary Kathryn Raines, Lena Alice Plauger and Radie May Lipscomb. Mrs. Long was a graduate of St. John�s Academy at Petersburg, Shepherd College and Davis and Elkins College with a degree in education. She taught for more than 30 years at various one-room schools in Tucker County, retiring from the Hamrick School in Hendricks. She, along with her husband, owned and operated the Fred Long Dairy Farm at Holly Meadows for many years. She was a member of the National Education Association, the National Retired Teachers Association, the former Holly Meadows Farm Women�s Club, the Tucker County Senior Center, Parsons Chapter 91 Order of the Eastern Star and ST. John�s United Methodist Church of Parsons. She is survived by one son, David E. Long of Keyser; two sisters, Hazel Murphy and Evelyn Barr, both of Parsons; either grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
