The Joseph McNemar Cemetery

The cemetery is located on the West Side of Knobley road in Martin, WV. You turn between the homes of Helen Harris and Marshal Woods and go up the gap and then it lies to the north of that road. All of the graves are unmarked.

Gary Tucker from Arkansas, who is a McNemar descendant wrote this information and also took the pictures.

With regard to the little cemetery on the old Joseph McNemar farm at Martin.... the following is my guesses as to who may be buried there. On the basis of 1840 and 1850 census information, it is obvious that Elias, son of Joseph and Ruth, lived very close to the parents and between Knobley Road and the parents' home. If the two chimneys mark the spot of the old Joseph McNemar home, as I think they do, it is logical that Elias and his wife Catherine Hilkey and family lived in the log house later lived in by Clara Dolly. It seems obvious to me that the site of the little cemetery was once a clearing and a logical place for a cemetery that would serve the family

Elias was born about 1800 and died about 1851. His wife Catherine was born about 1803 and died in 1857.

Joseph McNemar was born 1777 (based on age at death), died 27 Sept 1860 Ruth (Surname Unknown) McNemar was born about 1782, died 1871

Their daughter Amelia lived with them (along with her brother William and sister Sarah). When Ruth died, she willed her property to William, Amelia, and Sarah (because they were the ones who lived at home and looked after her). William never married but Sarah later married and left the family home. Land and census records indicate that William was not there in 1900, and it seems likely to me that his body was not returned there for burial. Sarah's death record indicates that she died at Glebe (Mineral County poor farm???). It is doubtful that her body was returned to the farm.

Amelia was born about 26 November 1798 and died 27 Nov 1878.

We saw 5 stones at the cemetery. I think it is possible that these stones were for:

1. Elias McNemar (buried about 1851)
2. Catherine (Hilkey) McNemar (buried in 1857)
3. Joseph McNemar (buried 1860)
4. Ruth (Surname Unknown) McNemar (buried 1871)
5. Amelia McNemar (buried 1878)
