Petersburg, W.Va., Oct. 1, 1897 People are fleeing by thousands from the section affected by the �saffron plague� in the South. This is a sure way of scattering it generally. A million dollars in gold was shipped to this country from Europe in one day last week, and American exports have broken all record. This can but mean prosperity, with a big P. Lieutenant Peary has given out that he will lead another expedition toward the North Pole next July, and will find it or die. There is no question as to which of the two things he will do. Mexico gives out that she proposes to make an example of the lynchers of the would-be-assassin of President Diaz. She could easily set a good �example� for her northern neighbors in this line. Newsy Keyser Letter Sept 28 � The West Virginia Paper Company is erecting a large building in which to manufacture paper for postal cards, as noted in our letter some time since. Attorney W.C. Clayton is attending court at Grafton. Dr. Richard Gerstell, of Cumberland, who has just returned from an extensive European trips, was in Keyser last week. He made an especial study of the methods of medicine and surgery in the European hospitals. At last our county court has made a move towards making the Court House and lot look respectable. A new pavement of fire brick is being laid in front of the square, and the street is being graded. Bayard and Vicinity Sept 27 � M.A. Lampe left Wednesday for Baltimore, where he will make his future home. Harman Rinehart, of Seymoursville, and Miss Eliza Roby, of Arthur, visited friends here and at Davis last week. Miss Fannie Clark, of your town, is spending some time with her sister, Mrs. D.G. Marshall. May J.M. Nugent was called to Preston county on account of the death of his mother last week. Deputy Sheriff Donovan sold the household goods of T.K. Nethkin Saturday under execution in favor of the Davis National Bank, of Piedmont. Invitation cards are out for the wedding of Jno. A. Bartley and Miss Leona Marshall, which will take place at the M.E. Church on the evening of October the 6th. Squire Lyon brought his family out with him Saturday and went to Oakland on a visit returning Monday. Mrs. Jno. A. Kimble is visiting in Davis. Ulyssus Workman, of Keyser, spent Sunday with his brother John J. Workman, of this place. Mr. Amos Berger passed here Monday morning on his way to Lahmansville, to spend a few days gunning. Gormania News Sept 27 � Chas. Wolf and wife and Mrs. J.H. Beckman visited friends in Davis last week. H.S. Thompton has moved his entire stock of merchandise to the Werner building, lately purchased by him. Miss Clara Kessel, of Arthur visited Mr. and Mrs. Veach last week. Mrs. Jacob Lantz and daughter, Rena, are on a visit in Maryland this week. Henry Likens is visiting at Wm. Everett�s this week.
