LOCAL NEWS:
We had a call last of the week from Mr. John Fout of Maysville.

Mr. Philip Feaster of Arthur called n the Press Friday.

The Methodist quarterly meeting will be held at Maysville Sunday.

Miss Nellie Moss of Charleston is visiting relatives in the county.

Nimrod Redman (colored) died here Saturday night.

Chas Bell, Esq., of Stafford Co., Va. Representing the Hood Nursery Co., was here last of the week delivering trees.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad have give out a $25,000 contract for the extension of the freight yrs in Cumberland, Md.

Among the visitors to our town Sunday was Walter Scherr, Jos L. Stayman and Noah May of Maysville.

Dr. Siple has just returned from South Fork and reports the fever abating.  It has been especially fatal in that region this season.

Mr. John Norwood of Frederick, Maryland is the guest of the family of Rev. Lowe at Medley.  He is a brother of Mrs. Lowe.

Mr. Elvin L. Judy has located at Maysville, to engage in the law profession.  Mr. Judy is a graduate of ___State University, and a nice young man.  We wish him well.

The teachers� reading club at this place was very largely attended Friday night and promises to be a success.  An elaborate program has been arranged for three weeks from this time.

Hillelson & Kaplan, clothiers once located at Keyser, and well know here, failed at Sandusky, Ohio last week with liabilities amounting to $40,000 double their assets.

We are in receipt of a letter from Mr. A. S. Kuykendall, of Seymour, IL, enclosing subscription.  Thanks 

We glean from his letter that he has a very substantial position with the Illinois Central Railroad.  His many friends at this place, the scene of his boyhood days, will be glad to know of his good fortune.  To these he sends kind regards.

Mr. Geo. S. Brake called o n the Press Saturday, and to him, we are indebted for the vote of 52 which he furnished us from a newspaper clipping of that date.  He cast his first ballot at that time, and has since been identified with the party of republican principles.

Mr. H. E. Schell, of Medley, will start last of this week for Lexington, KY, where he will attend commercial school. He most emphancally expresses his intention of staying until he gets a �sheep skin�.  Mr. Schell is a deserving young man, we wish him success.

Messes. John J. Stump and Frank Allison of Cumberland spent a day in town this week.

BAYARD LETTER
The election is over.

Major McKinley will take charge of the White House March 4th.

Gov Atkinson will be after March 4th .

That man Dayton who was nominated as a joke knocked Billy Wilson out two years ago and Junior Brown this year.  Not much of a joke after all.

Election Day in Bayard passed off very quietly, although we had the largest vote ever polled at this precinct.  Each side worked hard for their favorite.

At night elections returns wee received at the opera house.  By 1 o�clock McKinley�s election was assured. Shortly afterwards the Drum Corps with a big crowd turned out and painted the town red.

Jno F. Nordeck has foreclosed the Alpha Hotel at Horton and moved with his family Wednesday of last week.

The iron for the bridge across the Potomac arrived Monday morning.  The builders are at work and expect to have the same completed by Saturday.  The bridge iron having been furnished by a Canto, O., firm; the home of Major McKinley.  Why not call this the McKinley Bridge?

Johnny Stemmler who has been quite ill with malaria fever is much improved and will soon be out again.

The McKinley club and the citizens of Gormania celebrated the great Republican victory Saturday night.  The crowd was large and enthusiastic.  T.E. Shillingburg acted as chief marshal�the transparencies were the best we had ever seen.  Mr. T. M. Henderson constructed them.  The Salt River boat was grand.

Wm Werner of Gorman, who has been indisposed for some time is out again.

WHITMER NOTES
Editors Note:  I will give you a few items from this place, trusting they may be of some interest to your many readers.

Fever has been raging in this place for the past few months but is now gradually dying away.  Among those who are yet confined to their homes is Mr. Akim Sites of near Elk Horn, Grant County

Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Powers who recently spent several weeks with their relatives in Grant returned home last week.

The new Presbyterian Church which is being erected at Hotton, this county, is now under good headway, and will soon be completed and ready for dedication.

Business is dull here and it is thought by most people that it will remain so for the next twenty days at least.

Mr. Jno Nordeck of Bayard has bought and moved into the Hotel building recently owned and occupied by Potter & Lahman.
