Transcriptions by Judy Kimble and Ruth and Twila Hesse.

Notes from Ruth and Twila records states:

"Christopher "Lum" Burgess, at the age of about 18 received a spanking from his step-father, which induced him to join the army during the Civil War.  The first half day he spent on New Creek hiding behind a stump.  The loud noises from the cannons firghtened him.  Mr Burgess was later wounded during battle.  The government furnished the monument for his grave. "

They also state that the information was given by records in the court house and Mary Weimer who told of the story that her father, the late Charles E Smith made the coffins for the infants.  He used silk material from dresses to line them and carefully carved designs on the finished coffins.
