Rio De Jenero May 7 1849
Dear Farther
We have at last arived in port after Eighty Three days sail, part of the time verry bad weather and part of the time good. We had a good wind the first weak out and run over 1000 miles, which took us into the Gulf Streem and thin we had a verry hard gale that lasted Seven days, and twenty fours hours of the time we were at the mursy of the wind, and roling our fore and main yards into the water and sum of the time the sea would make a breach clear over us. We sprung the fore mast, the main royal, and carrid away two studsails booms, and came near going on sore at one time on the nothern cost of Brazil west of Cape St. Roke. We had calme and light winds at Cape St. Roke and a strong current runing north west forty miles a day and it took yus Thirty One days to get round the cape.
Nothing of much intrist after we got round the cape till we got into port, but I willrite off a fiew notes that I poot down from day to day on board the ship. Verry stormy up to the 14 of Feb when we carid away our fore studsail boom 15 wind light and ahead 20 we saw a bark and a brig stearing towards the Coast of Africa. Saw a number of Flying Fish and a Shark Good weather but the wind ahead
The morning of the 21 we saw a large scool of Porpoises, they would jump Clear out of the watter and sumtime turn a complete summer set. At noon we saw great bodies of Cegasa weed on the Surfis of the watter and two ships asturn of us but a wind spring up and we soon run them out of sight the Eavening wound up with a verry pleasent dance on the Quarter Deck.
22 Washington birth day was very fine and we had an extry allowance of provision and saw a ship stearing in the direction of the Gulf of Mexico and another past about two miles to the windward stearing north fresh wind in the night and hard rain 23 Nothing of Note Except lightning ine the night and hard wind 24 the wind still increasing and the sailors were ordered to take in sail and one of them made a-row with the mate and struck the Captain before they got him tide fast he was kept Bound till after breakfast and let go after asking Pardon of the Captain and mate 26 Munday wind fresh and Squally saw a sail 7 or 8 miles asturn of us and she continued so till near night when the wind shifted broght her to the windward of us and lost sight of her in the night 27 saw Four Sail in the morning Signalised one from Calcutta bound to the States we made a mistak in our signals and Told her we ware bound to the West Indies. at night Sum one wanted sport and went below gave the alarm that the ship was on fire about one o clock I was on deck at the time we Crosed the Tropic abot the same time with a fresh wind 28 Saw a Sail in the morning and a large Duch ship in the afternoon we saluted him and went asturn of us to the north March Tuesday 1th 1849 -- 5513 miles from Sandy hook on our Corse the first number of our paper whiched is published on board our ship was read in publick on the Quarter Deck Capt Goodrich Edditor. Fryday 2 the nearest land to us is an Isleland 1400 miles at 5 Oclock in the afternoon the Sun Moon and Venus were all visible at the same time and the wind is dead ahead. Saturday 3 at noon Their was a Isleland directly under us on the oposit side of the Globe and it was mid night with them when it was noon with us The sun sets a fiew minets past six here and three hours after with you. about noon we saw a steem goat stearing west Sunday 4 we had a Survis on board in the Morning, and in the afternoon we saw sum Grampus a Spcia of whale from 15 to 20 ft long.
