IBOC and FM HD Radio Problems that is taking analog  FM DXing away!  Just listen to the buzz!
No matter how much FM equipment you have its going to be obsolete soon as you get it out of the box or out of the store!   Just like PC's!!
The problem??  Its called High not so Definition Radio.  Its just nothing more than an mp3 like broadcast on a higher frequency subcarrier.   But you will need a HD decoder to listen to it.
FM DX signal DXing can be improved along with IBOC signals.

1.
Consider using a better FM antenna, such as a FM Yagi Antenna or ones with reflector  2. Try to the do the best in modifiing your radio receiver with 110 kHz or 150 kHz filters Something very  uni directional

3. Try to use 2 rabbit ear antennas connected to a preamp and attenuator.  Then use the rotary switches to reorient the FM antennas.   Best bet do this use a phase tuner like this one
here! to
4.  Use a better outdoor antenna or if not use a indoor dlpole antenna to pull in the analog signals.

About HD Radio :  According to other tests and experiences and reviews I have read. HD
radio is not really that High Def.  They say its digital, but there are problems with the reception quality.

1. The reception quality out of the tabletop radio in a brick building did not receive all the HD radio stations than the one in the living room connected to the outdoor antenna.
2.  DXing is not possible with HD radio,  its just like an audio subcarrier like SCA radio on
67 kHz and 92 KHz, except the carriers are found in the 110 kHz to 450 KHz section (means more signal loss than regular SCA channels.
3. When HD 3 comes out that means there will be more bandwidth being more consumed
by the transmitter leaving only that if the local station on 102.7 that means that 102.9 is wiped out including 102.95 MHz. means that the only DX solution is use a 110 kHz filter.
4.  The other problem is that HD Radio not going to be as clear as they say they advertise it.  CD quality sound.    That would require a 192 kbps signal to be put out and we only can hear only a 112 kbps signal bitrate.  Really it sounds poor  and tape sounded like.  cause to get a tape quality signal you would need 128 kbps.  and for CD you will need 192 kbps   and for Studio you will be 254 kbps which is what really the pros would want to rebroadcast the signal in a simulcast.

5.  Ok get this :  If one station really lost its transmitter and all of its HD radio equipment how can the station get back on the air?  That means that there is no replacement for another HD Radio station if we only just had digital only stations no one will be able to receive it so analog will live on! 6. Or what it a licensed and FCC approved broadcaster is coinsided with 102.7.  That means that the LPFM would really loose an audience over the subcarrier hash on 102.9 while a LPFM station trys to get out a low power broadcast signal.  So thats why we need to pay more respect to LPFM stations and keep that frequencies narrowed out.  .

6.The GCC is trying to help FM DXers make their goals this spring and summer  and the rest.  But with IBOC and HD radio its really creating a lost of interest in FM DXing.  Even though no matter how hard you try to get the best receiver and tuner HD Radio (IBOC is going spoil it for you)    Please go out there on the net and do tests and use phasing and nulling techniques such as diversity methods to null out the offending radio station with IBOC to get these rare DX signals.  I think some others like http:.//www.dxfm.com/ got it all figured out or some other DXer's but the game is not over yet between analog DX verses HD Radio.

7. As some advice : There are some  advanced HD FM seperate tuners that does pull in DX, but they depend on the conditions, but some table tops do receive some DX stations.    Please understand that you will not get all of these radio stations   you will have to have a good fairly strong signal to receive these weak digital signals.  This kind of equipment is recommended  for average everyday listeners and experimenters.     Also please visit this website for more information and see what we are talking about here why the GCC is not doing much DX as much as in 2005 and in 2006 .   If you want ot learn more about this visit our own group here to talk about it. We will be doing also
AM DX version as well soon.    DXing AM is another page we will be posting up here soon.   Wish you the best and accomplishment in  your FM and AM HD DXing.

8. Also please consider and understand that some electronic kit engineer will not come out with a HD FM receiver kit.  So thats taking away interest from the electronics theme.    To receive HD FM DX you will need a stable FM DX signal strong enough that it does not fade out     COMING SOON :  We will have another page on this!
