December 19^th, 2002 – Mr. Deeds

This is the first DVD that I’ve watched on my new DVD player.  My brother gave me his since he has a PS2.  I rented a bunch of DVDs last night, and this was the first one I watched.  The actually showed this movie on the plane ride out to Arizona, but I didn’t have any headphones, so watching it was pointless. 

 

The movie begins with a very rich person named Preston Black climbing Mt. Everest.  He makes it to the top, but ends up freezing to death.  Since he left no will, and had no living relatives, the search begins for his heir.  The company eventually finds a great nephew named Longfellow Deeds(Sandler) who is the closest relative.  They fly to his hometown of Mandrake Falls, NH to tell him that he is now worth 40 billion dollars.  The two people from the company, named Chuck and Sidney are going to get Deeds to sign over the stock to them so that they can sell the company for lots of money.  They convince him to return back to New York with them until they can get the paperwork drawn up.  While this is going on, the local tv tabloid program, Inside Access finds out about Deeds returning on the helicopter.  They send one of their men to try and find out about him.  The one guy finds out that Deed is single and that he likes to help ladies in distress.  The first night, Deeds meets his servants and checks out his new apartment.  The next night, he goes out on the town.  While he’s out, a girl from the tv show, named Babe(Ryder), pretends to get mugged.  Deeds saves her from the fake mugger.  She tells him that her name is Pam Dawson, and she just moved to New York from a small town in Iowa.  Deeds likes her, and asks her out.

 

The two go out that night, and Pam uses a hidden camera to tape everything that went on.  They first go to a nice restaurant and Deeds ends up beating up three people that make fun of him.  He then meets up with John McEnroe and goes out with him.  The next day, he wakes up in his bed with a huge hangover.  He doesn’t remember much of what went on until he sees it on the news.  This gets Chuck upset with him, and he is told to behave himself from now on.  Deeds goes out again with Pam the next night, and this time he ends up saving a woman and her cats from a burning fire.  The tv people edit the tape to make it look like Deeds is crazy, and Pam gets upset.  The next day, Deeds flies her in his private plane to her supposed hometown and they meet the locals.  After this, she realizes that she is in love with him, and quits her job.  She also tells her boss that she is going to tell him everything that night when she meets him for dinner.  Unfortunately, the story brakes first on tv, and Deeds is crushed.  He signs the company over to the two guys, and heads back home.  Pam is very upset and follows him to his hometown.  She fights another women to find out where Deeds is.  He ends up saving her from drowning, and then tells her that he doesn’t even know who she is.  Deeds then finds out about his company and tries to go back to save it from being split up.  Pam shows up to help also, and the two of them take on Sidney. The movie then ends.

 

I liked this movie.  It was a remake from a long time ago.  Maybe I should watch the original to see how it was.  I like DVDs.  They are nice to jump around the movie with, and they have lots of extras.  I don’t think I’ll be switching to them anytime soon, but I might get some of my movies on them.  I have UHF, and that’s enough for now.  If you like comedies, check this one out.
