Salespeople
Throughout the last year or so, I have had quite a few stupid salespeople. I don’t really mind them that much, but some of them just stand out. Even worse than stupid people are annoying ones. In this “rant”, I’m going to talk about both some stupid and annoying people that I’ve dealt with. This is mostly due to the most recent annoyance which was the third one with people at Giant Eagle.
The first thing that annoys me is when I use gift certificates. Half of the time the stupid people don’t give you change or don’t know what a gift certificate means. Basically, I give someone five dollars for a gift certificate, then that piece of paper is worth 5 dollars. People don’t realize this. The first time I remember this was when I was with Greg in Taco Bell. He paid with some gift certificates and had about 70 cents or so coming back in change. The girl gave him nothing and began to walk to the back. Greg had to stop her and say he wanted change. She looked like she was confused and told him he didn’t get any change. After some more conversation and after she went to get a higher up person, Greg got his change. The same thing happened to me at Subway. Heather and I went and paid for some subs with a $5 gift certificate. We should have gotten back a couple of dollars in change. The guy at the counter told us we didn’t get change and even when I tried to talk to him, refused to give it to me. I then went home and the next day I was complaining about it to Mom and I was writing a letter to Subway to complain. I know that may sound weird, but whenever I complain with a letter I usually get free stuff. I’ve gotten lots of free Mountain Dew whenever I complain about a half empty can or a broken can as well as some other free stuff. Any ways, Mom was there when I was upset so she called Subway and they said to come down to get my change. I got my change and 2 free 6 inch subs. It was nice but still annoying. I don’t understand what the problem is with kids these days.
The next thing that annoys me is the “Smarter Than You” salesperson. I define this as the people at Software Etc. in the Sharon mall that annoyed me a huge amount. I’m a big Nintendo fan. I have a Nintendo, a Super Nintendo, and a Nintendo 64. Since I have all these systems, I’m constantly buying games for them. Software Etc. sells used games and sometimes they have decent deals. One day I went up there and I was buying some games for myself for Christmas. They had just implemented this new discount card where you save 10% for 6 months but it cost $10. I bought my games for about $50 for 3 and when I was getting ready to check out, the annoyance started. The guy asked me if I had one of the discount cards. I told him no. He told me the aforementioned deal about it but I still told him I didn’t want it. Now if it had ended here, it would have been fine. Instead, he had to push the issue. After telling me again that I could save money, I told him that I didn’t care. He then said “Well, I’ve never met a man who didn’t want to save money.” I got so pissed off. I vowed never to buy anything if that guy was there. The next time I went and he was there I walked out without even looking at the stuff. I was in Boardman recently at the same store and he was working there. I again left without looking around. Now this was bad enough, but it happened again with a different person. I went up about a week later and this time Greg was with me. I again decided to buy a game that I wanted. It was only like $10 or so. I again got the talk about the savings card. I again declined and hoped that it was the end, but it was not. “But it’s only $10 and you save 10% for 6 months.”, he says again. I of course say that I don’t care. He then says “I guess you don’t want to save money then.” I again got pissed off and wanted to beat him. Greg thought it was really rude too. I haven’t bought anything at that shop since then. If I actually thought I would save money, then I would buy it. However, I would have to buy over $100 dollars of merchandise to get my money back. I don’t even come close to that in a year much less 6 months. I would have ended up losing $2 in the deal. Of course the people that work there don’t think I’m smart enough to realize that, and I’m sure that a lot of people aren’t. I really hope they change their attitudes. I’ll let you know if it happens the next time I go there.
The worst thing that I’ve seen recently, and the main reason for me writing this is the Hot Foods counter at Giant Eagle. Since I often am not at home on the weekends and some days when I’m off, I get food from here occasionally. I normally get barbecue wings since I like them. Now the wings are 40 cents if you get between 9 and 15. After 15 then are 35 cents. I like a nice round number so I get 10 wings which is 4 dollars. The first time I did this, and every time since then, I have heard one statement when I ask for 10 wings. “It’s cheaper if you get 12.” I am upset because it is in no way, shape, or form cheaper to get 12 then 10. The first time they told me this, I figured they had some special deal so I said okay and got 12. They then gave me 12 and it cost me $4.80. That, of course, is how much 40 cents times 12 is. I was quite pissed off since it was not cheaper, and I actually ended up spending more money. The next time I went there they did the same thing and I just ignored them and asked for 10. Then I went there on Tuesday and they did it again. This time I felt like responding. I asked for 10 wings. They said it was cheaper to get 12. I told them “No, it is not cheaper.” They just stood there and looked at me and then asked me again how many I wanted. It was like they were robots that thought I would change my mind by them saying that 12 is cheaper. I then asked them how much 12 was and they said $4.80. Imagine my surprise. I got 10 wings again. The next time I go, if they say this, I’m going to have to explain this to them. I realize it’ll seem like I’m rude, but I really want to know what the hell they are thinking. It’ll go something like this.
Me - I want 10 barbecue wings.
Them - It’s cheaper if you get 12.
Me - No it’s not. How much is 10 wings?
Them - $4.00
Me - How much is 12 wing?
Them - $4.80
Me - Then how in the world is 12 wings cheaper than 10?????
Them - How many wings do you want? - with a blank stare.
I know I have my problems but it really pisses me off when people act stupidly. I don’t know if it’s just the fact that they don’t realize things, or in the case of the Software people, they are just born annoying. It seems people can’t do simple math or understand how money works. I figure you would want that in the people you hire for a business. Maybe that’s just me. I’m sure this will continue as long as I live. I’ll try not to get too upset over this, but I can’t promise anything. Maybe I’ll start boycotting Giant Eagle, Subway, Taco Bell, and Software Inc.
