NOTE: A New Masters Points System Has Been Adopted In 2005!

As of January 1, 2005, the Greater Columbus Backgammon Club report club standings as cumulative totals for the year of ratings calculated as follows:

1)         One point will be awarded for each match played, for any player who does not get any points by winning matches.

2)         Ten points will be awarded for each match won, whether it was in the Main draw or the Consolation.

3)         Bonuses will be given for first place (winner of the Main) and second place (winner of the Consolation) as follows:

            #          The points for matches won will be multiplied by 2 for first place.

            #          The points for matches won will be multiplied by 1.3 for second place.

Events other than the monthly tournaments will not affect one’s standings.  The other events in question may include, but are not limited to, competitions versus other clubs; Internet play; and Jackpot or Knockout events.

This system is fairly consistent with, though not identical to, the one used successfully for many years by the Ohio State Backgammon Club.  The main difference is that OSBC uses a multiplier of 1.6 for the Consolation winner’s match points instead of 1.3.  The 1.6 multiplier leads to an anomaly that the majority of OSBC players are willing to live with, but that has proven an unpopular concept at GCBC.  This anomaly arises when the winner of the Main wins three matches, getting 3 times 10 times 2 = 60 points, but the winner of the Consolation wins four matches, getting 4 times 10 times 1.6 = 64 points, more than the winner of the Main.

Attempts to fine-tune the system by slight adjustments to the modifier can lead to some players getting fractional rating points, which isn’t bad in itself except that most players at both OSBC and GCBC prefer a simple, easily understood rating system that uses all whole numbers.  I’ve found that using 1.3 avoids the anomaly noted above, never leads to fractions or decimals, and works fine all the way through a draw of 256 players (hey, we can dream, can’t we?)

See you at our next tourney! J

Club Statistics - Club statistics are kept in a spreadsheet format.  This spreadsheet contains the results for 2004.  Other spreadsheets are available for 2003, 2002 and 2001.  For each year, one page is a summary of finishes for the tournaments, one is for Master Points.  There are also individual pages for each player in 2002 and 2003.  Any questions can be sent to the tournament director.
