A Quest for a Magickal Name

There are many different ways to derive a magickal name, among them are numerology, meditation,or divination ( tarot cards, runes, scrying). Some will choose names from natural sources such as:

 

1) Trees

2) Animals (totems)

3) Herbs

4) Flowers

5) Seasons

6) Natural Forces

7) Celestial Bodies

8) Stones

9) Elements

10) Astrological Signs

 

Or try a combination of any of the above, for example: Autumn Oak, Saturn Rose, Fire Storm, or Onyx Sage.

 

            There is no right or wrong method to find a name, but I was advised by my High Priestess not to choose the name of a Diety unless I was prepared to handle the attributes

associated  with that particular Diety. I happen to agree with her point of view.

Although using similar sounding names or combining segments of different Diety names

should  be OK.

 

            I believe the most important thing about your choice of a name is how you feel wearing it. If it feels right use it. Don't force it and it may come to you as it did for me.

 

            I derived my magickal  name from Frank Herberts classic sci-fi novel "DUNE". I had recently watched the new (2000) Sci-Fi Channel version of the novel. The lead character (Paul Atreides) was required to choose a name by the (Fremen) people of the planet (Arrakis). He chose Muad'Dib which is the name of a small rodent that has the ability to thrive in the harsh desert environment of Arrakis. It is also associated in the Fremens earth-spirit mythology with a design visible on the planets second moon.

            He chose this name because he also was able to survive the desert, due to the intense training he received throughout his life. He was trained in martial arts but his main advantage was that his mother was a Bene Gesserit Witch who taught him their discipline.

 

            Shortly after seeing this movie I was considering using Muad'Dib as my name when we had a meeting of covens to discuss plans for Samhain 2001.For background music one High Priestess said we would use something from the "Dune" soundtrack. This clinched my decision- The Goddess Had Spoken.

 

            As I write this article the new mini-series "Children of Dune" is premiering on the Sci-Fi Channel- Coincidence?

 

            I believe that the guidance we are receiving through learning the "Craft of the Wise" is preparing us to overcome adversities as Muad'Dib was able to overcome his.
