I've followed the adventures of Duke Nukem since his 2D battles with Dr. Proton on the PC, so I was very interested in the GameBoy Color version. I was pleasantly surprised. This game seemed pretty damned good so I found it my duty to try it out and bring you this review
Gameplay:
The game is a platformer. Duke starts out armed with a shotgun with unlimited ammo. There are plenty of other weapons in the game that Duke can also use with limited ammo (machine gun, rocket launcher, etc.). The weapons cause different ammounts of damage depending on what you use them on. There is also a good variety of different enemies in this game. Some walk, some fly, some slide, some roll, some shoot at you, some explode in your face, some slime you to death. As you can tell there's lots of variety in the enemy department
Most of the game is Duke walking, running and climbing through the levels, however there are also a few vehicle levels. You can drive a stolen alien tank and also fly a stolen alien craft. This also adds more variety to an already diverse game. As Duke goes through the different levels you have to pick up the occasional keycard to access a restricted area. You can also pick up power-ups, health, weapons and letters. The letters N-U-K-E-M can be collected in each level. If you collect all of the letters and complete the level you get bonus points.
Graphics:
The graphics are detailed and colourful featuring smooth character animation. The backgrounds look pretty shmick also, and also features added motion detail.
Occasionally, characters will glitch when there's a lot happening on-screen, this was very rare though. All considered, the graphics are great.
The level design is good. The levels are big and detailed. I never got too frustrated with the levels, lots to do in all of them.
Sound:
The sound is good. the weapons have good detailed sound effects. The music is decent and not at all annoying. Summed up, I was pretty impressed.
Controls:
The control in this game are also great and responsive. Duke jumps and shoots when you want him to. Also he can catch on to ledges and pull himself up, this adds a lot to the game play when compared to the more basic and boring control features of some platformers.
Final Comments:
This game was a great flash back of my old 386 PC gaming days. I really enjoyed all features of this game, and I'm sure other Nukem veterans will also. If you're unfamiliar with Duke Nukem, try out this stylish classic of the platformers, it's a real thrill.
