The best-selling Super NES game of all time is back! Remember blasting through levels in barrels and taking wild mine cart rides? All the jammin' jungle high jinks are back, along with DK's animal friends Rambi the Rhino, Squawks the Parrot, Enguard the Swordfish and more! The Kong Krew is also back! This is the game where DK's Kong-Panion Diddy Kong originally made his debut! Plus, DK is joined by Funky, Crankyand Candy Kong.
Gameplay:
You played it on SNES, you'll play it GBC. The levels are the same so if you know where everything is you may find it easier that a beginner. But hey, don't let that stop you! In addition to all of the original levels, it features completely new bonus levels, new bonus games, and two multiplayer levels (using a Game Link cable) including a fishing game, and sniping skill tester. As with the SNES version of DKC, you get to control Donkey and Diddy Kong, Rambi the Rhino, Expresso the Ostrich, Enguarde the Swordfish, Winky the Frog, and Squawks the Parrot (enough to keep anyone enjoying the game for ages). You will face enemies like King K. Rool, Kritters, Krushas, Klumps, Klap Traps, and Rock Krocs. The game proves to be fast paced, non stop action, incorporating the SNES game with new components.
Graphics:
One word... AMAZING! I have to say that these graphics are some of the best I've seen on the Game Boy Color! All characters and objects are pre-rendered sprites, this means that they look very realistic (none of this cartoony stuff). The animation of each character is very fluid and stylish, to tell you the truth I've never seen any thing like it. The walking sequences blend very well with the action ones, this means no glitches. The backrounds are just as good. You'll never get bored because the scenery keeps changing throughout the levels and game. Highly detailed levels add to the magic of the game. (Note: look out for suspicious changes in scenery, they could be hiding a bonus level, secret item or object!)
Sound:
You will not be disappointed. Original tunes from the SNES version have been re-mixed for the GBC version. Also adding atmosphere are the very suitable sound effects. Another pro., the tunes are matched with the feel of the level. For example the fun easy levels have light enjoyable music, whereas the more difficult levels have suspenseful concentration music.
Controls:
The controls are very natural and took no getting use-to. Left and Right control the horizontal movements, while down causes you to duck. Button A is jump and B is roll, dash, or pick up barrels. When moving barrels, you must hold the B button in to hold the barrel. The barrel is thrown as soon as B is released (Note: to put a barrel down instead of smashing it just hold Down and press B, if it's a TNT barrel it will explode after a few seconds). Traditionally Start is pause. To tag between Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong press Select. Another great detail to the controls was in the snow levels like on Gorilla Glassier, you actually slip and slide like you would on real ice, very nice! Overall the controls are very responsive and logical making the gameless frustrating and easy to navigate.
Final Comments:
Control and Gameplay are great! One thing that I think was a bit disappointing was in the level 'Torchlight Trouble'. On the SNES Squawks the Parrot helda torch to show where you are going, the torch only showed a small space around you, on the GBC as soon as Squawks appears with the torch the whole screen lights up, losing some of the levels mystery. This is only minor and besides if that's the only downfall I could come up with then it's got to be a winner. The amazing graphics made up for this anyway. Rareware has left Donkey Kong a bit quiet until now, Donkey Kong Country for GBC is the perfect come-back for the whole Kong team. If your a follower of the Donkey Kong series this is gonna blow you away! If not, you've gotta play this. Who ever you are, at least check this game out, you'll be doing yourself a favour!
