There have already been a few First Person Shooters released on the GBA, including the awesome classic DOOM. This in mind, Ecks V Sever, a title with absolutely no history, could be destined for failure.

Apparently this title is based on an up and coming film, titled Ecks V Sever (duh). It's quite bizarre for a game to be released before the film, and on no other platform than GBA. Nevertheless, Ecks V Sever is an aweinspiring masterpiece that reveals the true power of the GBA.

As mentioned earlier, this is a FPS. You can take the role as either Ecks (an ex-FBI agent, arrogant and scarred by his families death) or Sever (a rouge NSA agent and lethal assasin). This may sound a little cliche, but Crawfish have worked their developmental majic once again!

There are 12 missions for each player as seen through their perspective. The game's tie in with the plot is a very strong advantage for Ecks V Sever, as apposed to DOOM with it's mindless carnage (hey, there's nothing wrong with that though!)

Each mission begins with a fresh arsenal of weapons, this means you can't carry the shottie for the previous level to the next. This makes way for more stategic missions where you get what the developers give you. Missions may need you to use the sniper rifle exclusively, navigate dark passages using IR-Goggles. Gameplay is truly amazing.

As you know great gameplay isn't enough for a hit game, graphics must also be top-notch. Ecks V Sever sets a new standard for GBA graphics. Multi-leveled areas are both detailed and well mapped out. The "3D" engine used was created especially for this game, so it functions a little different from DOOM's. For instance there are no floor or ceiling textures in Ecks V Sever, but it does run at a faster framefate than DOOM's, alowing for greater detail. The major graphical point that sets this game apart from the rest is it's realism. Settings look real (no fantasy or sci-fi), all of the weapons are real, and you're shooting at humans not some alien beast-thingies.

There is no in game music! While this could be considered bad, it sure beats crap second-rate music (Army Men Advance anyone?) Menu screens have a nice little score that sets the spy mood nicely.

Sound FX are great. Each gun sounds unique and the way they should. Explosions and fatalities also sound nice (especially when you connect your GBA to some PC speakers like me!)

The controls are okay. Sure the gun firing and selection is good, but the movement can feel a little clumsy. The L and R buttons are used for strafing left and, you guessed it, right! The strafe function is too sensetive to make it practical. When hiden beside a doorway and strafe is used to peek around the corner, you'll find yourself right out in the open, very annoying. Once you've grown use to the controls navigation is much easier.

This game is awesome! No bad faults can be found. If you're particularly looking for a FPS, this is a must! One of the greatest games on the GBA yet. Wonder what the film will be like?
