1984 marked the date at which Peter Liepa created "Boulder Dash". It was published on all major home computer formats and sold over 100000 copies.
Basic enough to run on a Spectrum or Atari 800, yet challenging and fast enought to test the reflexes of the most advanced gamers, this game found the winning combination to create a game so addictive it would be produced for every system know to man, almost ;-) Gameplay is classic. Rockford, the game character, explores caves viewed from the side, in order to collect precious diamonds. Most of the dirt is "diggable" making diamond a matter of dig and grab. This is where boulders come in. Boulders, perhaps your worst enemies, are also spread throughout the dirt, when dug under, they balance for a moment then drop. The aim of the game is to collect enough diamonds to use the level exit without being crushed by falling boulders, or attacked by other enemies. Perhaps the most exciting and latest development of Boulder Dash is its upcoming release on a GameBoy Advance near you! It will include all of the classic gameplay elements (boulders, diamonds, and enemies), and new elements (rotating game environments, full color). The GBA is proving to be a real hit for retro gamers, and Boulder Dash could prove to be the most rewarding title for the system yet. |
