This was the first R-Type game I have ever got my hands on. I have heard a bit about it, but never knew what it really was. This game has an arcade feel to it and gave me memories of classic gaming days from long ago!
Gameplay:
The gameplay is classic. It is very repetative throughout the whole game, except for the increase of difficulty. That, st times, proves quite frustrating. The only other game that I have played with the same style gameplay and side view is Silkworm 2 on my cousins old Amiga.
Graphics:
Smooth animation of both your ship and the enemy feature in this game. Levels are very detailed and well designed. They also feature some interactivity of the enemy in the latter stages of the game; cool effects are a good trait of the levels. enemy formations are smooth and effctive graphically. I found no glitches and was happy with the overall product.
Sound:
Sound effects are okay, and okay only. They suffice for a game of this genre but could do with improvement as they are a bit dull. Music isn't too good. It will soon become very repetative and boring. Personally I play this game with the GameBoy volume down, and my stereo up!
Controls:
The basic controls are easy to pick up; Control Pad to move around, A to shoot and A held to charge weapon for a huge blast of ray gun power! As the game progresses, controlling your fighter craft become a bit more complicated but stil fairly easy. At some stages you will wish the up and down movements were a bit faster, but I guess this is all part of the challenge.
Final Comments:
This game was quite enjoyable. Nothing of this game was absolutely perfect, but it was original as far as GameBoy titles go. This is the king of game that you would play maybe once a week only. Good for a change. Definately rent it, try before you buy.
