CastleVania Adventure has more of those monster slaying antics that we originally saw in the first CastleVania. You play as Nathan who, weilding his infamous whip, navigates the medieval surroundings in search of his all-time foe, Dracula! This game looked promising so I bought a copy from a friend to try out.
Gameplay:
If you have played or are familiar with Castlevania 1 or 3, you know what this is like. It's a typical platform game. It's pretty fun, All truth be told, the replay value is not too good, but if you like the Castlevania series, you'll definately like this classic also.
Graphics:
Enemies, pitfalls etc look alright, for a first generation game. All in all, CastleVania Adventure has a pretty good layout. The power bar and score are well placed and clear. On the downside, jumping and whipping animation needs work, infact the whole character could do with some tweaking. He is too choppy. Also gravity is really wierd because it's like jumping on the moon.
Sound:
The music is pretty cool, it is very atmospheric and contains some very apropriate spooky tunes (they can be a bit freaky at times). Sound effects are great. Well done, Konami (finally a GameBoy game worth turning right up!)
Controls:
Jumping feels really awkward and the enemies sometimes attack you in ways seemingly impossible to avoid. My first attempt of this game was very frustrating, but I found that after a while the controls aren't so bad, it just takes time to adapt. When all is considered, the controls are pretty good, they just take some getting used to.
Final Comments:
When summed up, this game is pretty nice. If ever you find a good price on this game, I recommend you buy it. It will make a great and challenging title to your collection. The only real problems were the lack of replay value and sometimes the great difficulty, but with perserverance you should be able to complete this game with no worries.
