GGB1701'S  WORLD
Who is gb1701?  In a nutshell, I am a 30 something XY chromosome Homo sapian who works in indentured servitude to the vistors of the rather phallic-looking pennisular I currently call home.
My Origins: I was concieved by the union of an egg and sperm just as the turbulent 60's were fading and in time for Disco (you can't win them all and both periods still had the damn hippies). I'm originally from the City of Brotherly "Mug Your Ass Right Before I Throw You In Front of a Moving Subway" Love.  I moved to the Sunshine state 12 years ago where to this day, I continue to enjoy the benefits of low wage employment, Ricky the Rat, traffic congestion, pasty-white tourists from the UK and the current Republican-held regime.
Words to Describe Me (or what others have said): Pessimistic with a dry, dark and sarcastic sense of humor (Oh, like you couldn't already tell!). Intellectual, science-oriented and skeptical.  Opinionated, but open-minded, yet resistant sometimes to change.  I have difficulty going with the flow.  I'm really a nice guy (no...really!)
My Favorite Things and Hobbies: Star Trek and science-fiction. My love of Star Trek was influenced back in the day likely from my Godmother and a nature curiousity about space exploration. While I consider myself a  fan, I am not above being critical, especially when it comes to later failures like Voyager and Enterprise.  My best rationization of what Star Trek means to me is the message of a positive future of a combined humanity along with good moral stories. I am not however one of those convention attending geeks who dress like Klingons and frankly I think that element is what make some view all fans as weirdos (I am weird, but for other reasons).  My favorite sci-fi movie is the original Alien and the number one creature I would not want to meet in a dark alley.  Other interests include astronomy, writing and fitness and nutrition and finding new ways to be unique.
Things I Hate: Closed-minded hateful people (the Religious Right, conservative Republicans and rednecks-"The 3 R's"), sexually repressed puritians and others uptight about the human body and sex, those who do/watch/buy/wear the same things just because it's fashionable (you'll get no wool from me), discrimination against race, gender or sexual orientation, self-important people who drive and talk on cellphones (if ever there was an argument for the death penalty), tourists and Democrats who act like Republicans.
Best Music: Expect for the following below, I'll listen to anything depending on my mood, but mostly I am stuck in the 80's when it comes to the best.  I think the most impressionable music is what we grew up with in the teenage years and that was when MTV played the coolest videos (What do you mean they don't play videos anymore?)
Worst Music:  Country (the music they invented Prozac for) and rap with the single expection of Will Smith.
Best Authors: Alan Dean Foster, Robin Cook, Tess Geritson and Whitney Stieber (before his alien abduction phase).  I'm also found of the classics "The Golden River" by I.P. Daley and "Ole Brown Stain" by Yu Flung Poo.
My Views on Society or Exit, Stage Left:  While a few things I'm almost squarely down the middle (gun control comes to mind), most of my opinions have branded me a liberal, a fact I make no apologies for. I'd rather be open-minded to new ideas to advance the species then what I see as an attempt to maintain the status quo for the "good old days" (if it didn't work then, make makes you think it will now?).  I have real concern for future generations if they have to live in a world where the government and individuals can regulate thier bodies, thier choices in the bedroom, how to raise thier children or afraid to teach them a fundamental fact like evolution. I'm also alarmed by how little basic science is understood by society compared to pseudo-beliefs like UFOs, astrology or chupacabras.  My hope is we survive as a species long enough to seed our essence onto other worlds, as while I'm generally pessimistic about the human condition, I do believe we are capable of much good if we try.
My Take on the Meaning of Life or What if God Smoked Cannibas?: My understanding of the universe is best decribed as agnostic/deism or secular humanism, depending on the day. In short I do not believe in superstition, myth or unscientific dogma and while I am respectful of others' beliefs, the fastest way to end the conversation is a deliberate attempt at righteous conversion.
On Iraq or "Desert Storm Part 2: Liberate the Wells": I make no secret of being against our empire-building, corporate-benefiting, kill-feast (so a big F.U. to all the pro-war, chicken-hawk freepers and your fake patriotism). But let's just say that since the Kennedy's had booze and women, every great dynasty needs an obsession.  Make Dad proud, Georgie Boy! (and a moment of silence for the death of American democracy).
Those who I'm most thankful for: Both of the contibutors of my 46 chromosomes whose nuturing and teaching made me what I am today; J.- the sexiest and most special light in my life; my offspring and dear departed Stinky and Sparkles. RIP.
