Friday, April 13, 2007 - GFW Arena - Queens Bridge, NYC - Recap Results
Everyone packed into the run down GFW Arena for one final time. A full house of around two thousand loyal GFW fans came to pay their respects to the man that put the GFW on the map. Me and my buddy got seats right by the entrance way where they had a monitor set up for tributes to one of the all time greats Rod Gazinya. Anyways once the time came, Doctor Williams came out to welcome the fans minus Rexford Hurlburt who also apparently died in the place crash. We all thought that was funny because no one had ever heard he was involved. Anyways the Doc invited out Tyrone Black and Joseph Reginald Decromwell XIV Esquire to do commentary for the DVD that is to be released. Joseph was in pretty bad shape from the crash and came out in a wheel chair. The Doc alluded to the fact that Decromwell was not insured and he lost his entire fortune he won playing the lottery on operations from the plane crash. He was here commentating to pay his medical bills. He assured Joseph that the airlines would pay in the court of law as the two found their seats at ringside. Next, the Doc introduced Dick Gazinya who came out to the ring with a rousing ovation for the owner.
Dick came out in a suit, clutching the urn of his brother. They had a little speech about the show ahead and how this was all for Rod. A lot of people in the crowd seemed to think this might possibly be a hoax since they pulled this before once a long time ago and I was there. There was a different feeling in the air and the first match was set to go down.
Tag Team Match
Now there was a lot of hype that The SCW would send The Next Step to face the GFW's self proclaimed worlds greatest tag team but, with The Next Step bouncing from the SCW we all knw that wouldn't happen. Stinky Steve came out on his septic pump truck with Gideon the clown. They played some gags with the fans and then got on the microphone. They claimed that The Next Step was scared to show their faces. Gideon even claimed that The Next Step bouncing from the SCW without putting over the NDE first was selfish but, pretty regular politics in wrestling these days. After plenty of talk Gideon challenged Stinky Steve to face him one on one as a tribute to Rod Gazinya. Stinky accepted and the fans were really treated to something special.
Singles Match
The two of them put on a pretty decent match considering they are usually used for comic relief. I wasn't surprised because I have seen Stinky Steve mat wrestle with the Rookie before and he had done a hell of a job. Gideon however really showed his mat skills off and beat Stinky with an inside cradle. They hugged in the end and shook hands before teasing the crowd with the septic pump truck hose. They did not spray it this time and everyone in the front rows was relieved.
Winner: Gideon via pinfall @ 7:21
Student Vs. Student
Next up came the man who had the last GFW match with Rod Gazinya. Mike Moore came out and payed a little tribute to Rod, talking about Rod wiping the mat with him but, finally being in the main event. Havoc came out and interrupted him. They went at it and had a solid match. Mike Moore hit the Texan Slam, the Big Boot and the Texas Pride before pinning Havok in the middle of the ring to the crowds approval.
Winner: Mike Moore via pinfall @ 9:10
Before the SCW showcase matches went down a video feed began with a shot of the SCW logo on a black background. Slowly the logo faded to a closeup shot of SCW President Tony Scott dressed in a navy blue buisness suit. A pained expression crosses his face as he looked directly into the camera.
Tony: On behalf of everyone at Stampede Championship Wrestling I would like send my condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Rod Gazinya. Although Rod only worked for us at SCW for a short time it was long enough to see how full of life he was. Rod was an exemplary employee, full of creative energy, and always available to his fans. He was a gifted athlete and I'm saddened we'll never have the chance to see him reach his full potential. Tonight all of SCW joins you in celebrating a life that was cut tragically short. Rest in peace, Rod. You'll never be forgotten.
Tony bowed his head in silence as a smiling image of Rod Gazinya fills the screen. We then were set for the two big SCW showcase matches of the night.
SCW Showcase
Next came a big SCW showcased match. Chris Sinclair was way over against his long time nemesis and everyone knew who they were. The Crimson Dragon took Sinclair to the limits. After a long back and forth match, Sinclair locked in a sleeper. The Crimson Dragon managed to get near the turnbuckle and flp over head into the pinning combination but, Sinclair tightened the hold and made the Dragon tap just as the referee made the three count. After much disputing between the officials the match was considered a draw. I heard that this will be settled in the SCW in the near future.
Winner: Double pin/submission declared a draw @ 15:45
SCW Showcase
What was supposed to be the SCW World champion versus the SCW heavyweight champion in a non title match did not happen because Watson lost the title at the last pay-per-view. However, both men came out ready for action with Scotty Mac getting extra heat for his fued with Dick. Speaking of Dick, he came out clutching the urn of his brother once more. He entered the ring before the match got underway and gave a speech that went something like this.
Dick: Scotty yes, you beat the Dick. Then again you beat the Dick everyday. Only difference is you can't beat this Dick without assistance. But, that's old news. After you agreed to come do this show for my brother, I heard you talking about how Watson isn't worth your time because he lost the World title. You put down everyone on my roster. You insulted me and my fans and frankly I'm not going to take it. (Dick turns to Watson.) Damion, thanks for coming out here to pay your respects to my brother. It was well appreciated by my family but, apparently we aren't going to need you tonight. (Shakes his hand before he exits the ring then turns back to Scotty Mac.) Since you are such a big man Scotty and everyone is out of your league, I have someone that is right up your alley.
Winner: No contest
Dildo on a Pole Match
To the laughing of the crowd, SSM (Sexy Strong Man) appeared from the back dressed in his usual jewelry and make up. He was carrying a massive dildo that had to be three foot long and as thick around as one of those big red whiffle ball bats. He waved it around and Scotty looked very concerned.
Dick: If you are the man that you say you are then let me introduce to you Sexy Strong Man! No I am proposing a challenge to you. A GFW original, Dildo on a Pole match!
Scotty looked in shock as he must not have known the GFW actually did these matches back in the day. Mike Miller came out and set up the pole in the corner where he strung up the dildo above the ring. All the same time SSM eyeballed Scotty Mac and licked his lips. Scotty became quite nervous and finally said "Fuck this" and walked out.
Winner: SSM via forfeit
This got a really good reaction among the fans even though two matches didn't go down. Definetely an entertaining segment. Next, the screen lit up and Frankie Gazinya was shown in a wheel chair in a hospital room. He talked about something crazy. Something like Rod pulled the door off from him even though it was a known fact that Rod died upon impact in the place crash. Frankie seemed really out of it and I felt bad for his condition. The camera turned to see the Yankee Kid in a full body cast laying in bed. We got a few good laughs because he was wearing his mask over his body cast. He rambled something about 9/11 and the plane crash. I think he was comparing them but, he seemed so high on the meds, he didn't make much sense.
Champion Of Champions Match
Next came the champions of champions match which had the whole place on fire. Calvin Johnson came out to a mild reaction but, Kid Kaos tore the roof off the place when he came out. When Jugernaut came out the arena was bursting with a mixed reaction. It was sad to see Jugernaut in such bad shape, he was slow and didnt take much bumps. Adam Lax evidently didnt show up, nothing was ever talked about it. Calvin and Kaos went at it, when Kid Kaos suddenly hit Jugernaut with the Holla Back taking him down. Calvin tried sneaking up on him, but Kid Kaos locked him in the Kaos Krab and Calvin had no choice but to tap out as Jugernaut wasnt able to pull himself up in time to break the hold. After the match, Kid Kaos and Jugernaut shook hands but, Jugernaut didnt seem very happy to have just lost the match.
Winner: Kid Kaos via submission @ 17:16
After the match Nester DeFranco came out with a trophy. He awarded Kid Kaos the champion of champions since he beat two other former GFW champions. Nester claimed that Kid Kaos was one of the greatest to ever come along in the GFW. He thanked him for his contributions and also joked about his match with Kid Kaos in the finals of the King Karnage tournament. They shook hands and got a very good reaction from the GFW faithful.
After this match, Devon Payne made a brief appearance on the monitor to pay his respects. Devon was a lot older looking than I remember. He used to be he in the very beginning when Dick was "Iron" Richard Gazinya so that is saying something. He said a few nice words and then we are alerted that Dan Logan from the SCW is in the front row. I don't know how anyone missed him but, the Doc was sure to point him out to the fans. He waved and smiled before the video tron showed a video tribute to Rod Gazinya. Afterwards everyone got geared up for the main event.
Main Event
Nester once again came out but, this time with a championship belt. He claimed that since Rod died holding all the GFW belts, that there must be a way to carry on the tradition. He had a special belt made as a surprise called the GFW Rod Gazinya Memorial Championship. He wanted it to be put on the line between Dick and Starchild. The fans clapped for the noble move and the two competitors for the main event came out. The Starchild and GFW co-owner owner Dick Gazinya went and put on a really good match for the fans in what was surely a tribute to the late Rod Gazinya. The match was so great in fact that it reached a thirty minute time limit draw.
Winner: Time Limit Draw @ 30:00
The other GFW co-owner and also the Starchild's father, Jugernaut came out and claimed that this was no way to end the show. He said he would use his power as co-owner to restart this match. He also said that since he was one of the all time GFW greats, holding the world title longer than anyone in the companies history that the match would be restarted as a triple threat with himself in it. The fans chanted bullshit. Dick and the Starchild seemed shocked that Jugernaut would let his ego get the best of him, especially with his old age and out of shape physique.
Second Main Event
With Starchild and Dick worn out from the thirty minute draw, Jugernaut wasted no time laying out both his son and the co-owner with a steel chair. He decided to pin the Starchild as some sort of payback for losing to him at Hardcore Once More.
Winner: Jugernaut and the first ever Rod Gazinya Memorial Champion via pinfall @ 1:04
Jugernaut celebrated in the ring as the fans booed. He really seemed full of himself as his ego had apparently gotten the best of him. He posed with the belt and acted like it was the first title he ever won. If he wasn't so damn old and out of shape I wouldn't have had a problem with this but, this definetely was a disgrace. Finally Nester came out and slipped Dick the urn that holds Rod's ashes. When Jugernaut turned around he got clobbered over the head with the urn. He wobbled around and then got hit by the Starchild with the same chair that Jugs used to lay them both out. Jugernaut layed motionless in the center of the ring as the Starchild, Dick and Nester all embraced in the ring with Rod's urn. That was an odd display.
Dick then got on the microphone to close out the show. He thanked everyone for coming out as well as everyone who participated in the event. Dick then proceeded to say that he has not been himself since the death of his brother. He hoped that this final show would bring him closure and he could return to being the dominate superstar that the SCW signed five months ago. He talked about how this occurance has instilled inside of him a faith that he could not fully describe. Dick talked about religion and some other balony. He said his days of working against the lord were over and he would now go by his real name, Richard Gazinya instead of his porn name Dick Gazinya. That was very odd but, apparently this had an effect on him. He then told the fans that he was given a trump card in the SCW for a title match of his choosing by Tony Scott. He said that was his reward for putting over everyone he was asked to put over recently. He said he would hold that for a rainy day because he was not concerned with holding titles. He said he had one concern in the SCW and that would be well known when Adrenaline rolls around. The rest of the cast and wrestlers came out as a final tribute video played for Rod Gazinya. Me and my buddy skipped out of there by this point to avoid the traffic.
All in all an entertaining show. It seemed toned down from the usual GFW stuff. I think that was because the SCW was involved and they have a lot of influence these days. It was strange not having Rod appear out of no where like he did at the last Rod Gazinya Memorial Show. Anyways, they should be putting out a DVD in the future of this event so be on the lookout for that. I am particularly interested in seeing what this one concern is of Dick that we will all find out about on Adrenaline.
