Plan ahead and Prepare: Introductory Activity

Materials:
Food for trip- some more efficient than others
Bags for repackaging food
4 Similar daypacks/bags to pack the food in
Scale
Learning Objectives:
Students will appreciate the benefits of repackaging food
Understand the broader context of why planning ahead is essential for success
Outline: (total time: 45minutes)
Lay out food for trip in piles for tent-groups
-half get lightweight foods, half heavier foods
Ask groups to weigh their food to start off, record weights (5 minutes)
Let groups repackage food as necessary (10 minutes)
- aiming for the greatest weight, size and packaging reductions.
Have groups share positives and negatives of what they were provided. (10 minutes)
Assess and share how well the food packed down, how much weight did they save? (10 minutes)
Discuss: (5 minutes)
-efficiency
-fuel, utensils, cleaning
-weight savings
-reduction in trash, litter
