The following areas are among those that inform the feedback. They have been chosen because of their relationship to adventure leadership and expedition training. As a leader you will have an opportunity to work with many of them. Together with the content of pre-workshop readings and the information in your Workshop Binder, you should be able to develop a good sense of yourself as a leader.

I feel that I developed significantly in several areas, others did not get addressed by the content and requirements of this course.

 Expedition Leadership Development Plan

Major Strengths

Major Stretches

1. Equipment

1. Weather

2. Temperature Management

2. Navigation

3. Program Activities

3. Animals and Plants

How can you use your strengths more effectively?

I think my strengths contribute to my ability to be an effective behind the scenes sort of leader. I am well suited to assist with pre-trip planning or teaching participants necessary skills beforehand or as we go. I should express my strengths with the group so that they will know to come to me for assistance in the areas of my strengths.

How can you develop your stretches to be a more effective expedition leader?

I think that I have some stretches that are luckily relatively easy to develop. I will include them in what I want to teach my participants, which will help to force me to increase my mastery of the subjects.

I can increase my understanding of weather by regularly observing weather in my daily life and correlating it with what I can learn from weather reports. I will continue to refresh my factual knowledge of weather on a regular basis.

I should try to do some navigation components in my personal life so that I am prepared to do them in a program setting.

I will seek out workshops and guidebooks that can increase my knowledge and understanding of animals and plants in the areas I am likely to visit.

Expedition Leadership Plan of Action

On future expeditions I will make sure to better communicate my thoughts and decisions to both my co-leader and participants. If possible, I will try to choose a co-leader that has complimentary strengths and weaknesses. I will continue to be diligent about checking in with participants about their individual needs, but also monitoring the entire group for non-verbal cues about their status. I will continue to develop my personal time-management skills so that I can be a good role model for participants. I will strive to achieve the highest level of preparedness before the trip even when there are many other demands on my time. By developing my weaknesses and emphasizing my strengths, I feel I can become an excellent expedition leader.
