Activity Summaries:
Introduction: Consider the best first impression which you can make on the specific clients and perform it to the best of your ability. Simply introduce every facilitator and helper or have each facilitator give a self-introduction. They may also give a little background of their lives or the lead facilitator may give a generalized description answering what you all do and why.
Challenge by Choice: Tell the individuals in the group that they have a choice in how much they participate in the activities and how they will be challenged and encouraged to participate in some way. If they feel that they do not want to participate in a specific activity, that person does not have to but they have to participate in another way by helping, being attentive, or in other ways.
Full Value Contract: This is the agreement which the whole group must make together about how to treat each other and what they expect from one another. You can have them make the contract themselves or proceed as the lead facilitator in going through some general safety guidelines, respecting other people, and everyone pursuing a fun time.
Circle-to-Circle Activity Summary:
p. 40 in Journey Toward The Caring Classroom
Procedure:
Have students stand in a circle. Ask people to find partners, quickly. They will switch partners later.
Have partners look at each other according to an attribute. (ex. Whoever has shorter hair, more of one color on, older, etc.) The person with the shorter hair stands on the inside of the circle, facing their partner. Now there should be two circles, one on the inside of the other, with the inside one facing the outer one.
Give the pairs an activity to do which are suggested but not limited to…..
a. A Last Detail: Everyone looks at his or her partner. On a signal, everyone turn around and changes three things about their clothing. On the signal when everyone is ready, they turn around and try to guess three things that were switched by their partner.
b. Tie Your Shoe: Each pair should have at least one person with tied shoes, or have the ability to borrow a laced shoe from someone else. The shoe(s) are untied, and the task is to re-tie the shoe(s). The only catch is that each person in the pair can only use one hand.
c. Macro Rock/Paper/Scissors: Make sure that everyone knows the rules of what a rock, paper, and scissors looks like. On three the partners do one of the three motions to see whom wins.
d. High Fives: Have partners create 3-5 different high fives. Tell them to be creative. Some participants might not know what a high five is, so make sure to make this known. Once they are down, if time allows, have each pair choose their favorite one to share with the group.
e. One-to One Interview: Each person gets a minute or so to tell their life story, to their partner. Afterward have partners share what they learned about each other to the group.
After each of these activities listed above, have partners discuss something about themselves. (ex. Favorite food, favorite place, hope or goal in life, where they are from, etc.)
After the activity and discussion, have one of the circles rotate to the right or left by one or two people. After the rotation, each person will have a new partner, with a new activity and discussion following the activity.
Sticky Situation
-Participants are given a roll of masking tape and the following instructions:
-you are to unroll this entire roll of tape without letting it touch anything except your skin- no clothing, walls, chairs etc. You will want to be able to reuse some of the tape for the next activity!
-have the group decide their goal for how many times they will allow the tape to break
-set an appropriate group boundary within which they must stay- take into consideration group size, group comfort with each other, and that a smaller area will make the activity more difficult.
-if the group seems like it is especially high-functioning, consider the additional rule that the tape must come in contact with everyone in the group at least once.
-if a group finishes really fast, consider asking them to roll the tape back up again!
-Plan to Debrief approx.5-10 minutes- tie debrief back to their experiences with 4-H!
Potential Debriefing Topics:
-planning process -communication
-roles -leadership
Balloon Tower. Taking tape previously used from other activities you are going to tape the team or groups' balloons together to form the tallest balloon structure possible. It must stand for one minute before you may take it down and move on to the next activity. You may allow the group to use the tape any way they deem fit for their specific plans. The group is allotted as specific amount of time because of constraints on time and the amount of times they are able to try should be limited because their resources like balloons and tape are limited as well. When the groups finish they should pop their towers – choose a method according to how far along the other groups are.
-Plan to Debrief approx.5-10 minutes- tie debrief back to their experiences with 4-H!
Potential Debriefing Topics:
-planning process -communication
-roles -leadership
Additional Activities if groups finish at different times:
-if possible try to adjust sticky situation and balloon tower so that groups will finish around the same time. This could mean different challenges towards the ends of the activities or a longer debrief if there is some good discussion happening.
-gotcha
-stand in a circle arms length apart, one hand palm up, the other hand points into the palm of the person next to you. When facilitator says gotcha, participents try to catch the one finger and avoid being caught with the other.
-Funny Faces/Snort
-stand in a circle, start in one direction and everyone tries one at a time to get the person next to them to laugh by snorting or just be being funny. No touching. People who smile/laugh become hecklers outside the circle, still no touching.
-step tag
-one or more persons are it, everyone else is a not-it. All participants move one step at a time upon command of the facilitator. No tag-backs.
-balance knock
-participants stand face to face (decide how close according to the groups readiness) and with hands up, palms out, try to make the other player take a step forwards or backwards. No touching except hands to hands.
Slide Show
Participants divide up into the teams that they were in for the day. They then reflect on things that happened and decide on a moment that stands out to them, whether it be funny, serious, scary, etc. Then they figure out a way to act this moment out for the other groups. This should be done with everyone on the team in mind and efforts to include all.
May want to throw in the idea of people being the slideshow tape: opening and closing, to get the juices flowing. There are many ways for this to be structured, encourage the participants to be creative!!!!!!
Ah So Co-
Participants stand or sit in a circle. They pass mystical energy around with special commands. Ah passes the energy to your left with your right hand across the chest; So passes the energy to your right with the left hand over the head; Co passes the energy to a person across the circle with a slap of the hands together directed at that person. The receiver of a Co can refuse the pass with a No, hands up palms out. The sender then must pick a different recipient. An Ah or a So can no be No-ed.
