Where You
Should Not Apply!!!
(No
Matter What Your Score is)
1.
You
should not apply to Universities in the state of Texas, unless,
·
You
have some form of aid before you fly.
·
The
University is TAMU – College Station.
·
You
are crazy.
Why?
·
Most
universities in the state of Texas have up to 50% Indians, or more, which means
a lot more competition, for the following things,
ü
All
forms of aid.
ü
On
Campus Jobs.
ü
Off-campus
Housing.
ü
Registering
for courses.
ü
Jobs
after MS in case if they are available.
And if it is competition that you don’t mind, then
you might as well stay in India (doing either an MTech or hunt for a job) and
not spend all that amount of hard earned money in the US.
·
And
why is it ok to apply to TAMU – College Station? That’s because, this university
is so well renowned all over the world that it’s worth taking all those risks.
2.
You
must not apply to any of the Universities, which fall in these states.
·
Alabama
·
Mississippi
·
Louisiana
·
West
Virginia
·
Arkansas
·
North
Dakota
·
South
Dakota
·
Nebraska
·
Oklahoma
·
Utah
·
Idaho
·
Montana
·
Wyoming
·
Vermont
·
Maine
·
Kentucky
Why?
That’s because these states are simply worth for
doing “kheti-baadi” and nothing else.
3.
Do
not apply to University of New Mexico because one of my seniors told me that
there are no good professors and there is a problem with the courses in CS and
most students who had landed in UNM, at his time (Fall 2001) were heading for
other Universities.
4.
Do
not apply to University of Arizona, Tucson, because, none of the students
(irrespective of the department) who had applied to this University in Fall
2002, got an admit to this University, that’s because, in some earlier year,
some students of Mumbai (Bombay) University had allegedly created certain
problems in the University.
5.
Do
not apply to U Mass Amherst, because they only admit 40 students out of 700
applicants on an annual basis. So unless, you know you are going to get into
it, don’t apply there.
6.
Do
not apply to University of Kansas, unless you have 70% or above in Academics,
because, for admitting students from India for the year fall 2002, they had set
the criteria of 70% in Academics, below which they were not even considering
the Application.
7.
Apply
to New Mexico State University only if you have appeared for the Subject GRE,
in fact you first must find out whether the Subject GRE is necessary for the
University in which you wish to apply to.
8.
Do
not apply to Virginia Tech unless your area of Specialization in CS is SE, HCI, Networking, Bioinformatics or Databases.
9.
Do
not apply to Arizona State University, unless you are the topper of your
undergrad University, or you have some form of job experience, because for Fall
2002, only two students from Mumbai University had got admission into the CS
department.
10. Do not apply to any of the
Universities in the US mentioning two or more areas of Specialization in your
Statement of Purpose.
11. Do not apply to IIT,
Chicago, because, the Computer Lab is only open for 9 hours a day, whereas
almost all of the Universities have their Computer Labs open for 24 hours a
day.
12. I could still talk about a
lot of other Universities, but you must understand that it will not be possible
for me to do all that work, so it would be best for you to send me the list of
Universities, in which you are wanting to apply, so that I could screen out
those that are having some form of problem or the other.
13. So, where the hell should you
apply? The answer is that, if you really want to go to the US, no matter what,
you must apply in those Universities, in which students of your class or of a
higher class had got admits AND their GRE scores were less than yours, in this
way, you will be sure of getting an admit, provided the other parts of the
application are well-placed. Hope you get the point.
