During the past decade, the Internet and the World Wide Web have changed forever the face of computing. Sitting down in front of a computer is no longer an inherently private event --- there is a sense of connectedness that did not apply to the average user even a few years ago.
This global aspect of computing has already changed the way we use machines and what we use them for, and is bringing many of the social implications of computing that have been debated in academic circles for decades into sharp and immediate focus.
It will be a major focus of this course to introduce students to the basic principles and techniques of computing. Online discussions will deal with the effects of computerization, on individuals, government, business, and industry. Social and ethical issues, concepts of problem solving and computer hardware will be explored.
