Chapter
Five

Yami
was pacing back and forth in his soul room frantically, not understanding what
was going on inside his mind. Kaiba had kissed him. Seto Kaiba; Yuugi’s one
true love and the bane of his existence, had kissed him. The concept just was
not making sense in his head. When one thought about Kaiba and about kissing,
they immediately thought of Yuugi. Not him, Yuugi. Somehow the concept of the
brunette ever kissing him had never entered his mind. So why was he so
surprised that, in a moment of delirium, Kaiba, thinking that he was Yuugi, had
kissed him? And why, of all things, were his lips still tingling from
that momentary connection? Why was his heart still pounding frantically in his
chest? And, dear Ra, why was he still picturing the other’s lips against his
own, picturing himself pressed up against the other’s firm, lean body, clinging
to him as his imagination carried the image, playing out into a scene where he
responded to that kiss, wrapped his arms around the taller duelist’s neck and
twined his fingers in his hair.
Then
an image of Yuugi filled his mind and he had to resist the urge to scream. What
in the name of Ra was he doing?? It was obvious that Kaiba was still in love
with Yuugi, despite everything that had happened between them; the older boy’s
subconscious had proven that. So what on earth was he doing imagining himself
making out with the brunette when he should be trying to find a way to make his
aibou happy again? He’d absolutely lost his mind. That was the only possible
answer. What other reason could it be? He’d never found the young billionaire
appealing before. Sure, he was handsome, and strong, and fiercely loyal to
those he loved, and sexy as hell in a pair of tight fittin—GAH! He shook his
head, growling to himself to trying and dislodge the mental image that was
doing things to him that it shouldn’t.
/Yami?
What’s wrong?? Did something happen?/ Yuugi’s worried voice filled his mind
and, not surprising, he heard his aibou rapping softly on the door to his soul
room. Feeling like a heel, he went to the door, letting the other in.
“Yami?
What happened?!” Yuugi was in his arms in an instant, startling the dark
spirit, and just for a moment he indulged himself in holding his aibou
close. He shivered a little at the
feel. This was why he had locked himself away. He couldn’t bear to watch day by
day as his aibou ran into the arms of another. Sought out someone else when he
was hurt or lonely. It made him feel more alone than he could ever remember.
And more useless.
“Yami?”
Yuugi was looking up at him, confused, and he cursed himself for the mental
lapse, releasing the smaller boy.
Yuugi
was watching his dark half with undisguised concern, following him into the
room, and placed a hand on his arm.
“Yami?
What’s wrong??” He asked softly, biting his lip. “Did something happen with
Seto?”
Yami
flinched a little, biting the inside of his cheek.
“Anou…
sort of…” He hedged, not sure what to say to the boy, or how to say it. “Kaiba
woke up for a minute or so… He thought I was you… I think he had his memories
back, or at least some of them.” He murmured softly
Yuugi
blinked in surprise at that, then paled, a pained look crossing his face. He
wasn’t sure he wanted to know what Kaiba had said to his Yami, thinking he was
him. He hadn’t spoken a word to the
brunette before this incident since the day that he’d walked out.
“W-what
happened?” He finally asked, seeing a peculiar expression cross over his dark
half’s face.
“He
said he was sorry… that he never meant to hurt you…” Yami murmured, not looking
at Yuugi directly; something the smaller boy just couldn’t figure out. One
thing he could tell, though, was that his dark half wasn’t telling him
everything.
“And…?”
He prompted.
“And…
He kissed me.” He said softly, not wanting to see the look on Yuugi’s face.
Yuugi
was in shock. Seto had kissed Yami? More so, Seto had kissed him thinking that
Yami was him? Suddenly he felt the need to sit down, and did so, looking quite
dazed. He could tell that Yami was watching him with concern, but his mind was
still trying to process it. Kaiba had kissed them, in a sense. Yami’s
personality may have been in control, but it had still been his body. So in a way, Kaiba had kissed them both.
Something about that notion caused a peculiar little twinge in his chest, but
he didn’t want to think about that just
now.
Seto
had apologized! That was something Yuugi had little to no memories of. Seto
never apologized to anyone. `Cause, as far as Seto was concerned, he was never
wrong. That he was say he was sorry filled Yuugi with a warmth, but despite
that, and the kiss, he didn’t let himself get his hopes up, because it still
wasn’t an explanation for why Seto had been avoiding him those last few weeks.
“Yuugi?”
He blinked a little when he felt his Yami’s hand on his shoulder and looked up
at him, sighing softly. He could see the mix of worry and…guilt, was it, that
was in his other half’s eyes. He figured that Yami probably felt bad for being
the one in control when Seto had kissed them.
“I
miss him, Yami.” He said softly, biting his lip. “Despite everything, I miss
him so badly. “
Yami
felt his heart wrench at those pained words and he gently pulled his smaller
half into his arms, hugging him gently, trying to comfort him to some extent.
“I
know you do, Aibou. I know.” He murmured softly, rubbing the smaller boy’s
back. Yuugi slumped in his arms, clinging to him for comfort. “I know how much
you love him, and I know how hard taking care of him like this must be for you.
But maybe… maybe when this is all over, you and he can try again. Talk with
him, try and work out your problems.” He suggested softly. “You two belong together. “ {And I belong in
the background.} He thought solemnly, blocking the feelings of despair he felt
off from Yuugi.
“Maybe…” The smaller one
murmured, his face buried in Yami’s chest. Deep inside, he wanted nothing more
than to fix things with Seto and be together with him again. He sighed a
little, nuzzling his dark half’s chest. He wasn’t completely oblivious to his
other’s feelings, and the last thing he wanted was for Yami to shut himself off
from him again. {Maybe…. Just maybe… all three of us could work things out…} He
thought, almost daring to hope.
Seto
groaned a little as he woke up, feeling groggy, and more than a little
disoriented. The first thing he noticed as consciousness set in was the fierce
throbbing in his cheek., and tried to recall what the source of it was. Little
by little he remember waking up in the hospital with amnesia, meeting Yuugi and
his brother, going home… but everything
after that was just a blur.
Blinking
slightly, he brought his hand up to his stinging cheek. Odd images were going
through his head, memories from the nightmare he’d apparently been having. He
figured they were parts of his past, but the images were so disjointed that
they didn’t do him any good. With a sigh, he looked around the room, pausing
when his gaze fell on Yuugi who was sitting in a chair next to the bed, looking
quite spaced out.
He
sat up a little, frowning thoughtfully, and waved his hand in front of the
boy’s eyes. He was startled when he got no reaction from him.
“Yuugi?” No response.
Frowning
in concern, he leaned forwards, snapping his fingers in front of the other
boy’s face. It took nearly a full five seconds for the small boy to jump
slightly, turning his confused gaze up on him. Had he not been right up in the
other’s face, he might have missed it, but to his surprise, the boy first
turned pale, then a bright crimson right before his eyes.
“Yuugi?
Is something wrong?” He asked in concern, hesitantly placing a hand over Yugi’s
smaller one.
Yugi
jolted a little at the touch, but had to resist the urge to pull his hand back
entirely. Looking at the other’s gaze, he couldn’t be sure if Seto still had
his memories that apparently he’d had when his Yami had woken him, but judging
by the look of open concern and hesitance, he had a feeling that he didn’t.
“Anou….
I- I’m okay, Seto-kun. I just spaced out there for a minute.” He said lamely,
rubbing the back of his head.
Seto
frowned a little, narrowing his gaze at the boy. He got the distinct feeling
that he was hiding something, though for the life of him, couldn’t imagine
what. So he just figured it had to do with this seemingly catastrophic
relationship that they had had before he’d been injured. Whatever that had
been.
“Well…
if you’re sure…”
Yugi
immediately pounced on the chance to change the subject.
“Un!
I’m fine. What about you though? It looked like you were having nightmares,
really bad ones. You kept thrashing around and crying out.” He said softly,
genuinely concerned. The look made him want to pull Yugi into his arms. Well,
more so than he already did, that is.
“Yeah,
I guess I was.” He murmured, chewing his lip lightly. “Though I don’t remember
them too well, no—“ He blinked a little, his eyes falling on Yuugi’s wrist ,
the one attached the to hand he was covering. It was mottled with dark purple
splotches in the shape of a….hand print? Hesitantly, he slid his hand up over
the other’s wrist, gently encircling it in his large hand, and hissed under his
breath when the marks matched the shape of his hand.
“Did
I do that to you?” He asked softly, worry and guilt filling his voice as he
gently lifted Yuugi’s hand, examining his wrist closely.
Yuugi’s
breath caught in his throat when Seto’s hand touched his wrist and he shivered
a little, looking up into the other’s intense gaze. It took him a moment to
even register the question, what with the way that Seto’s thumb seemed to be
rubbing his wrist unconsciously. He felt like he would melt into a puddle at
any moment.
“Oh,
no, it’s okay. Like I said, you were having nightmares. You didn’t even know
you were doing anything.” He said gently, trying to reassure the stricken
looking brunette.
Seto
bit the inside of his cheek, looking at Yuugi intently, trying to decipher all
the expressions that passed through his wide, violet eyes. Beneath his fingers,
he could feel the smaller boy’s pulse throbbing and knew that just this little
bit of contact excited him. Hell, his heartbeat picked up just looking at the
smaller boy, so he figured that they were even on that count. Still, the flush
in the boy’s cheeks, and the pulse pounding away beneath his fingertips made
him want to see what other reactions he could get from the boy, as well as put his
theory about their past relationship to the test.
“Still, I hurt you, and it
looks quite painful.” He said gently, bringing Yuugi’s hand up to his face and
pressing his lips to one of the larger bruises. As if on cue, Yuugi’s
pulse spiked up, nearly doubling in speed, and a heated flush spread throughout
his face. But the one thing that Seto hadn’t counted on was the look of pure
terror in the boy’s gaze as he pulled back from him, startled. His chest tightened painfully at the thought
that he’d put that look there.
Yuugi backed up quickly,
stammering some sort of excuse before rushing out of the room, leaving Seto
there on the bed, torn and confused, and wondering what the hell he’d done to
hurt the boy so badly.
Mokuba
entered Seto’s room some time that afternoon, carrying a tray of soup and a
baked potato that he’d had one of the cooks make for his brother. Broccoli and cheese soup, and butter on the potato. It was one of his
brother’s favorite meals, though, for the life of him, he couldn’t figure out
how the older boy could willingly eat broccoli. It was just a mystery to him.
But he figured everyone had to have their faults, even his big brother. He
wouldn’t hold it against him, that’s for sure.
He
spotted his brother sitting up in bed, a contemplative look on his face until
he spotted him. Mokuba felt a grin spread across his face when he brother
smiled at him, less reserved than the ones that he usually got from him. He
knew he should feel bad that he was so grateful for that aspect of his
brother’s memory loss, but he just
couldn’t help it. It reminded him of when they were younger. Seto smiled a lot more back then. Sometimes he missed those days, but he
wouldn’t change his brother for anything in the world.
“Oi,
Nii-sama, I brought you something to eat.” He chirped brightly, setting the
tray down on Seto’s lap as he pulled up the chair beside the bed.
Seto
grinned at him lightly, causing him to beam.
“Aa,
thank you. It smells good.” Seto murmured, his stomach letting out a loud
rumble of appreciation that had him laughing and Seto chuckling sheepishly.
“No
problem! It’s your favorite. I thought it might make you feel better.” He said
fondly, looking at Seto with an adoring gaze that only a little brother could
pull off.
Seto
couldn’t help but smile down at the boy. He was just too delightful. Everything
he imagined he would want in a younger sibling. And the loyalty that he seemed
to exude warmed Seto’s heart like nothing else. He had the troubling notion
that it wasn’t something he got too much of. Of course, given his status in the
community, he could certainly understand why.
“Thank
you, Mokuba. Sometimes I wonder if you aren’t the overprotective brother, and
not me.” He said automatically, then paused with his spoon halfway to his mouth
when he realized what he had said.
“N-nii-sama?”
Mokuba looked just as startled as he felt.
“I…
I don’t…. It just seemed like the right thing to say.” He said helplessly,
looking at the smaller boy with an apologetic gaze. “I wasn’t thinking about it
and it just seemed like what I should say.”
Mokuba
nodded at him understandingly and to his relief, that beaming smile returned.
“It’s
okay, Nii-sama. You’re remembering. You just have to take your time and let it
come back to you.” He said, his voice full of confidence that Seto envied.
“Un, I guess you’re right. I’ll just have to be
patient then.” He murmured, closing his mouth around the spoon and relishing
the taste of the food. He didn’t doubt that it was his favorite. It was
delicious.
Mokuba
nodded at him and sat on the side of the bed.
“But
don’t worry about it, Nii-sama, you have Yuugi and me to help you until you get
your memory back. And well tell you everything you need to know.” He said with
a nod. Seto wanted to smile at him, but
instead he looked thoughtful.
“Mokuba…
tell me about Yuugi.”
“Nii-sama…”
“Tell
me about my relationship with Yuugi.”
