Disclaimer: Nope, not mine…

Okay, chapter two. Not so many changes as in the first one, just more little hints at my interesting, yellow-eyed character. And no, it’s not an OC ^^

Breaking Twilight

Yugi stood motionless, staring in shock, as he watched the boy across the dueling field. He stared off into a stunned silence, no longer even aware of his surroundings, only the boy in front of him. He was dead on his feet, almost like a zombie, having not slept since they’d arrived on the island, but even his exhaustion went unnoticed as he silently watched the brunette.

He wasn’t sure how it had happened, but here he were he was, finally at Pegasus’ castle, dueling the love of his life who just happened to be using what might possibly be the most powerful card in all of Duel Monsters. As he stared in disbelief at the icy colored monster in front of him, he had never felt more betrayed in his entire life.

After exiting the labyrinth where he and Joey had tag-teamed Mei and Kyuu, they had been almost instantly confronted by Seto. When he had first seen the brunette again he had been overwhelmed with relief to see that he was okay, but that relief had been quickly shattered when his love had told them that to get into the castle he had to first defeat him in a duel. Even hearing his words, agreeing to them despite the objections from his friends, Yugi hadn’t realized just how serious Seto was until he’d pulled out the ritual to summon the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon

Had he been planning this all along? Had their night together, Yugi’s precious, guarded treasure, been nothing more than a carefully constructed lie? A battle tactic to weaken his guard and pierce his defenses? Yugi could feel the tears stinging in his eyes just considering it.

‘Don’t be a fool, Yugi!’ His Yami reprimanded him forcefully. ‘Seto loves you and you damn well know it. You should be ashamed for ever doubting him!’

The words were like a mental slap for Yugi, knocking him out of his self-pity and bringing him to his senses. His Yami was right. He had seen the love clearly in Seto’s eyes countless times the previous night, and looking closely, he could see that this duel was tearing Seto apart as much as it was him.

A wave of guilt moved over him.

‘You’re right. I was stupid for not believing in him; for not trusting why I loved him in the first place.”

‘This is Pegasus’ doing. Somehow, to save Mokuba, Seto has to first defeat you in a duel// It’s a win/win situation for Pegasus. One way or another, he’ll have someone out of his hair when this is over.’ His Yami deduced. He could tell that his Yami was just as upset as he was, though his Yami was angry. Somehow, his dark half’s anger gave him strength.

He’s a fool if he thinks either Seto or I will give up just because we lost.’

He felt his own anger rising towards Pegasus for making him and Seto fight. It wasn’t just anger, though. It was like a white-hot rage that seemed to from every pore in his body. It scared him but, at the same time, it made him feel powerful, more confident. Like he was ready to face anything if it would bring about Pegasus’ downfall so that they could save the ones they loved and finally have a chance to work things out between them.

Could they even have a life together outside of this island? He desperately hoped so, was terrified that they couldn’t, but needed more than anything to find out.

Yugi studied Seto intently. The other boy’s eyes seemed impassive and cold, but just when Yugi was about to tear his gaze away, they flashed. It was only a brief flickering that would have been missed had he blinked. But, in that instant, he’d seen all the love and devotion he needed to feel like a total idiot for having ever doubted his koibitto. His heart swelled and he swore that they would see this through. He needed nothing else if but to believe that.

But for now, they had a duel to finish.

Despite that he knew what Seto’s motivations for this duel were, he wasn’t about to let him win. The older boy’s pride would never allow it. Nor would his own. Only one of them was going to get into the castle and Yugi was going to try his hardest to make sure he was that one.

He looked over his hand and knew that he had nothing that could beat the Blue Eyes, but he still had to play something.

“I summon the Dark Magician and place it in defense mode.”

Yugi wasn’t certain, but he almost thought he saw Seto wince. A fake sneer crossed his beautiful features and he looked up at the magnificent dragon he had created.

“Pathetic. Blue Eyes. Ultimate Burst!!”

Everyone stared, dumbstruck as the mighty dragon merely turned to glare r his master, then turned his nose—er, noses—up in the air, disdained.

A pair of narrowed golden eyes watched these events with detached fascination. Such sights weren’t unfamiliar to him, but it was more than a little surprising. He watched silently, waiting for the scene to continue to play out.

Yugi felt his eyes grow wide at the sight. Was…. Was the card deliberately disobeying him? The idea sounded ridiculous, but Yugi couldn’t shake the feeling that that was exactly what was happening here.

“Anou…. Blue Eyes?” Seto’s voice was bewildered and concerned as he looked up at his beloved creature. The dragon, to everyone’s amazement, glared at him fiercely with all six of it’s eyes, and Yugi could have sworn he saw pain sparkling in their depths.

No one was quite sure what was happening when the dragon began to glow and, in a blinding light that covered the whole dueling field, was replaced with a young boy. Yugi could feel his heart pounding in his chest and was finding it hard to breath as he stared at the extraordinary sight.

The boy had two darkened silhouettes on either side of him, each mirroring his form perfectly. His spiked hair and satiny clothes were the same icy metallic color that the dragon had been, but his eyes were a deep cerulean, just like Seto’s. Yugi felt like he might faint at any moment, he was so entranced with the boy. Maybe it was his resemblance and connection to Seto, but, whatever it was; the sight of pain in it azure eyes had him wanting to hold the boy to him until it was erased.

The Dragon-boy glared  at his master again before going over to stand next to the Dark Magician, who, to everyone and most especially Yugi’s amazement, had changes as well.

The mage in the middle of the dueling field no longer wore his bulky armor, leaving his long, lean body encased in tight-fitting robes that were a deep purple. His hair, once a short-cropped violet, now fell in shimmering golden cascades, the magnificent strands of it gleaming in the waning sunlight. But the sight that made Yugi’s heart clench was the sight of tears in his sky colored eyes.

Their masters could only watch them in shock.

“I will not obey you.” The dragon boy’s voice was soft and rich, the sound of it enchanting, but it was filled with a barely suppressed rage. In a state of shock, Yugi turned towards his own monster questioningly.

The blond mage turned towards Yugi.

“Nor will I you.” Yugi could only blink in surprise as he was faced with a rebellious mage.

Seto couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Not only his precious dragon, but Yugi’s mage as well. He wasn’t sure what surprised him more, the fact that this was possible, or the fact that it was actually happening. He couldn’t think of anything he had done to earn his monster’s scorn and it seemed inconceivable that Yugi would have ever disrespected his magician.

“Y-You’re going to mutiny?” He asked incredulously, part of him expecting to wake up from this fantastic dream. He was taken aback when his former dragon speared him with a  disparaging look

“If It will put an end to this nonsense.” The dragon boy, seemingly oblivious to the tense air, turned his gaze on the blonde mage, the hard look in his eyes dissolving into an expression that Seto was more than a little familiar with. After all, he saw it reflected in his own gaze whenever he thought about Yugi. The thought had him swallowing deeply, but he still wasn’t prepared for when the boy crossed to the mage, wrapping his arms around his slender waist.

“You get to be with the one you love. To look at him and know that everything will be alright once you can hold him. But when I look at the one I love, I can only feel despair. Why should you get to embrace your love, when I have to destroy mine?!”  The boy demanded, his voice choked with the tears that were threatening to rise in his eyes.

Yugi, who was watching on, couldn’t suppress a gasp at hearing this, and sorrowful tears dotted his own eyes. Their cards hearts, whether boy coincidence, or some indefinable connection, now mirrored their own. It was too much for his already strained emotions to bear.  By dueling, they had done to their most beloved cards what Pegasus had done to them in forcing them to fight. Only it was far worse for their monsters. They weren’t merely forced to compete against one another, they had to fight until one destroyed the other.

Seto was watching the events in a state of shock, his mind refusing to comprehend all of this, and he couldn’t think of a single thing to say that didn’t constitute as monosyllabic mumbling.

The cards loved?

His own beloved dragon was in love with Yugi’s own Dark Magician; his small Koibitto’s own signature card. And it was returned. Was the this the true ‘heart of the cards’ that Yugi had so often spoke of, or was it something else entirely? He couldn’t remember ever being more confused in his entire life, even after Yami had used his mind crush on him.

Enough!!” Yami’s powerful voice rang out over area, catching everyone’s attention before he shifted back to Yugi. The smaller boy had tears of sympathy in his eyes as he looked over at the two monsters.

“You’re right; this isn’t fair.” He said softly,  as he walked over to Seto, his back to his friends so that they couldn’t see him removing the star chips from his glove before it was too late to stop him.

“I forfeit.

With those words, the violent tension in the air seemed to dissipate and the monsters on the field vanished without a word. There were gasps all around, but the two boys ignored them as they studied each other intently. Yugi knew that this was what he had to do. He would not stand in Seto’s way of protecting his brother, nor would he force their cards to  battle anymore.

“Save Mokuba.” He whispered softly, so that only Seto could hear him. He looked up at the other with a loving gaze, wanting the other to see exactly how much he meant to him before going off into the castle alone. “I’ll be there as soon as I can, just please, Seto, be careful.”

The taller boy nodded and raised his battle disc, removing the card from it and handing it to Yugi who was holding his own Dark Magician card. His precious Blue Eyes, the card that meant more to him than the rest of his entire collection combined. True, he had three, but this one had always seemed the truest. He had always felt as if it had chosen him from the beginning to be his master.

“They should be together, don’t you think?” He asked softly, his voice choked with emotion.

The tears were now streaming down Yugi’s cheeks as he looked at the cards in his hand. He couldn’t help feeling that they looked right together. He reached up to his throat to unlatch and remove the ever-present collar, handing it to his lover in an unspoken declaration. Seto seemed to understand that he needed him to take it. Needed to feel that a part of him would be there to look over him until he could get there in person.

The brunette wordlessly latched the strap around his neck and a moment of silent understanding passed between them before Seto pulled Yugi into his arms, enfolding him in a desperate embrace that Yugi welcomed and returned. Soft murmurs passed among his friends, but he ignored them, wanting to savor how safe he felt in Seto’s hold.

The hug ended much too soon and Seto pulled back, wordlessly turning and walking away, heading back inside the castle.

Yugi didn’t even notice that the eyes of one of his friends had gone a mysterious yellow, or that the two cards  in his hand had begun to glow, merging into one. He unconsciously slipped the card into his deck, and turned to rejoin his friends who were still in a state of shock.

Somehow, some way, he would get into that castle and, if anything happened to Seto before he did, there would be hell to pay.
