A. Joseph McCarthy- McCarthy was responsible for charging thousands of Americans with harboring communist supporters. He destroyed thousands of careers and reputations while doing this, until eventually the senate shut him down.
B. Great Society- The Great Society occurred in the United States. It was a new program set up to help the poor and the disadvantages. During the 1960s, the government expanded its social programs. Kennedy wanted to improve health care for the elderly. After his assassination Lyndon Johnson, set up the Great Society. This funded Medicare, job training, and low cost housing.
C. Ronald Regan- President Ronald Reagan like Thatcher in Britain wanted to cut back in government spending in social programs. Congress did end some welfare programs, reduce government regulations, and cut taxes. But military spending did increase.
D. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka- In 1954, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling, they stated that segregation schools were unconstitutional. However some Southern Schools resisted but Eisenhower and his successors upheld the law.
E. Martin Luther King Jr.- Marin Luther King was a gifted preacher. He emerged as a leader of the civil rights movement. Luther was inspired by Gandhi's nonviolent civil disobedience. Luther lead many nonviolent protests to finally end segregation and prejudice.
F. St. Lawrence Seaway- In 1959, Canada and the United States completed the St. Lawrence Seaway. It opened the Great Lakes to ocean going ships and linked the interior of both countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
