1. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts.
2. He attended the University of Virginia, but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts.
3. He also attended West Point, but was dishonorably discharged for intentional neglect of duties.
4. In 1836 he married his 13 year old cousin Virginia Clemm.
5. He suffered from bouts of depression and madness, and attempted suicide in 1848.
